A row of trucks pulled in on the N5 near Ballaghaderreen due to the hazardous conditions.

Traffic on the N5 near Ballaghaderreen is down to a crawl as overnight road conditions have made driving hazardous.

The video below shows trucks being forced to pull in this morning on the Ballaghaderreen bypass due to the icy conditions.

Motorists who contacted the Roscommon Herald have spoken about multiple cars skidding and trucks pulled in waiting for grit to be spread on the road between Ballaghaderreen and Carracastle in County Roscommon.

The area most affected affected is a 5km stretch west of Ballaghaderreen.

In a statement to the Roscommon Herald, Roscommon County Council said: "Crews were deployed by Roscommon County Council on two separate occasions in the past twenty four hours in accordance with the council’s Winter Maintenance programme. 

"One crew was deployed for salting yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) while the same crew was deployed to salt the affected road earlier this morning. 

"The local authority is investigating the circumstances as to why a stretch of road on the N5 subsequently became icy. Roscommon County Council crews are monitoring all roads and responding to any issues as they arise."
