A section of the new N5 will open by Easter, it has emerged.

Roscommon County Council CEO Shane Tiernan confirmed the news at a council meeting this evening, Monday.

Mr Tiernan informed councillors that the Frenchpark bypass is set to open by Easter "subject to safety verifications being signed off on before then".

He outlined that the exits and the entrances along this portion would have to be controlled for a number of weeks in order for works to be completed and "fully blended in".

This section of the new road is seven kilometres long.

The N5 project, involving a 33km upgrade of road, runs between the Ballaghaderreen bypass and Scramogue, and will bypass Frenchpark, Tulsk, and Strokestown.

Mr Tiernan said that this was “a good news story” and that there may be a formal opening of this Frenchpark section in the coming weeks.

The Council CEO said he would inform councillors of the exact opening date “as soon as we get clearance”.

Council Cathaoirleach Liam Callaghan hailed the announcement as "great news".
