Seven sports clubs to get €50,000 in funding

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys announcing new funding for sports clubs.

Seven sports clubs in the county are to receive funding of €50,000 each following an announcement by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys.

Clubs that will benefit include Boyle Celtic Football Club for the construction of a spectator stand; Roscommon Tremane Hurling Club to install a surface of artificial grass carpet with underlay of shock pads; Kilglass Community & GAA Centre for a new eco-friendly car park including wheelchair accessibility areas, a bike rack and green spaces; St Joseph’s GAA, Kilteevan for the renovation of grounds at GAA park; Kilbride GAA to resurface car park providing drainage, lighting and wiring for car charging ports; Elphin GAA Club to construct a new spectator stand and Castlerea St Kevin’s GAA for carpark works and lighting of the area.

Local Fianna Fáil Senator, Eugene Murphy, has welcomed the new grant funding saying it was being provided as part of the CLÁR (Cantier Laga Árd-Riachtanais) programme funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and formed part of the Government’s ambitious new five year policy for rural Ireland, Our Rural Future.

Senator Murphy said: “It is fantastic to see the time and effort put in every week by club members and volunteers in our communities to be rewarded with this new funding.

“I want to thank every club member and volunteer for everything they do in making our communities a better place,” he said.

Senator Aisling Dolan also welcomed the announcement saying the funding would be such a boost for players, coaching teams, committees and volunteers. “Funding of car parks and spectator stands in sports clubs is part of a new measure introduced this year by Minister Heather Humphreys – it’s all about the development of community and sports facilities in our towns and villages. Well done to the volunteers who made the applications and ensured planning permission in place if required,” she said.
