Met Éireann has issued a severe weather alert for County Roscommon, which comes into effect from 8 p.m. this evening.

The Orange level alert is warning of extremely cold weather with widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow.

The public are being advised of dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays and animal welfare issues.

The persistent bad weather has caused disruption to schools and many services, with the west and north of the county worst affected.

Several schools remain closed while some Local Link bus services in the Arigna, Boyle and Castlerea areas have been cancelled due to very poor road conditions.

The severe weather warning will be in place until tomorrow morning.
