Shock and anger as huge changes announced for Roscommon Town Post Office
Roscommon Town Post Office.
The news that major changes for Roscommon Town Post Office are on the way has been met with shock and anger locally.
An Post has announced that the post office, currently run directly by the company, will shortly become a contractor run post office. A spokesperson said it was :likely that a new location for the services would be sought by the new postmaster”.
It’s understood that the tender for the new contract will be advertised in the coming weeks with the process expected to be completed over the next three months.
The spokesperson said that An Post staff employed at the existing post office could consider a number of possible options, including taking up employment for the new postmaster, when appointed, or being redeployed within the An Post network.
While An Post said it would continue to provide a “top-class service” in the town, local councillor Tony Waldron said he was “shocked and angered” at the news and would be opposing any moves to close down the building.
“This post office has been part of the fabric of Roscommon Town for decades, providing vital services for many people of all ages. Its services should be expanded rather than closing it down,” he said.
The Independent councillor said the announcement was causing a lot of upset to the workers and their families.
Cllr Waldron said he would be contacting An Post senior management to express his strong opposition to the plans. As chairperson of Roscommon Municipal District, he also intends calling a special meeting of local MD councillors to discuss the matter.
