Tributes have been paid following the untimely passing of Roscommon and Strokestown footballer, Martin 'Fozzy' Fallon.

Mr Fallon, who was in his mid-50s and worked as a paramedic, passed away suddenly on Thursday while on duty.  He was attached to the Boyle ambulance base

A noted midfielder, he was a key figure in Strokestown's historic senior county championship success in 1992, their first since 1933.

He was also part of the squad that won the senior championship ten years later in 2022.

Mr Fallon also donned the county colours with distinction, representing Roscommon at all grades, and playing league and championship for the seniors during the 1990s.

Strokestown GAA said that it was "deeply saddened" by the sudden and devastating passing of Martin ‘Fozzy’ Fallon.

"Fozzy was a true legend of the black and amber, and he will be sorely missed by everyone in the club and the wider Strokestown community. Everyone at Strokestown GAA extends their deepest sympathies to Ann, Jack, Amy and the extended Fallon family," said the club

As a mark of respect, all club activities are suspended this weekend.

The club is holding a gathering this evening, Saturday, at 6 p.m. at the club grounds. Everyone is asked to wear Strokestown club colours and to bring a candle.

Colleagues in the Sligo ambulance service said it was "with profound shock and disbelief that we learned of the sudden untimely passing of our dear friend and colleague Martin Fallon in our neighbouring Boyle Ambulance Station. Words cannot describe the feeling of sadness and grief that has descended upon the National Ambulance Service (NAS) .

"Martin was a larger than life character not only in stature, but in personality, integrity, professionalism and dedication. Martin was a shining example to us all, a quiet unassuming gentleman with the ability to deliver a quip without breaking stride.

"Our loss is immense but pales in comparison to that of Martin's devoted family, close friends, and his long time crew mate Paul, to all of whom we offer our deepest sympathies and condolences."

The National Ambulance Service colour party also expressed condolences to the family and friends of "our colleague Martin Fallon who sadly passed away while on duty."
