A stunning mural depicting Arigna miners has been unveiled to coincide with a festival celebrating the area’s rich mining heritage and marking the 35th anniversary of the closure of the local mines.

The large mural on Arigna community hall was painted by Nik Purdy from ‘Blowdesigns’.

The local AREA community committee thanked Nik for "working his magic over the past week" and Kyle Flynn, Rural Recreation Officer with Roscommon Leader Partnership, for his help on the funding application and ensuring the project reached its completion.

The committee also thanked the support of Fr Tom Cox, parish priest in Kilronan, Fr Cathal Faughnan, and Sean Regan for his preparation work on the building.

“We are thrilled to have the mural in place in time for the festival this week, and it will certainly enhance the village. Thank you to everyone who reached out and commented about the mural. It’s great to see it attracting such positive attention,” said the committee.

The Arigna 35 family festival continues this weekend and is offering everything from history to football and memories to music.

The official opening of the new community park will also take place on Saturday.
