Suspected historic explosive device found in County Roscommon deemed ‘non-viable’

The army responded to a request for assistance from An Garda Síochána.

The army bomb disposal unit attended the scene of a suspected historic explosive device in the county over the weekend. 

The incident happened on Elphin Street in Strokestown. The device was deemed to be non-viable and removed by the army.

The Defence Forces confirmed that on the afternoon of Saturday, January 4th, bomb disposal experts from the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to a request for assistance from An Garda Síochána.

This was in relation to a suspected historic explosive device found in the Strokestown area.

“Following an assessment of the item by the EOD team it was assessed that no explosive material was present, and the scene was handed over to AGS. This operation has now concluded,” the spokesperson said.

Gardaí said they received a report of a suspicious device, and following enquiries, the device was deemed to be non-viable and removed from the scene by the army EOD.
