It cost more than €300,000 to rent six school prefabs in County Roscommon last year, new figures reveal.

Five primary school prefabs and one secondary school prefab cost a total of €301,823.76 to rent in 2023, according to data provided by Education Minister Normal Foley.

In Leitrim, €202,817.98 was spent on renting four primary school prefabs; in Mayo it cost 630,937.92 for 16 prefabs; in Galway, 1,083,611.49 for 23 prefabs and in Sligo, rent amounted to 416,553.93 for 12 prefabs.

Currently there are 455 schools around the country renting prefab accommodation, 323 primary schools and 132 post primary schools. Approximately €28m was spent on renting prefabs last year.

The data was provided in a parliamentary reply to Dublin Labour TD, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin.
