Three separate housing developments, comprising a total of 49 social homes, were officially opened by Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien when he visited County Roscommon recently.

Minister O’Brien began his visit in Monksland where he officially unveiled a new 27 unit housing development at Esker Lawns. Later the Minister travelled to Roscommon Town where a mix of one, two and four bedroomed units was unveiled at Elm Court, Lisnamult, as part of a twelve unit development. A further ten new houses, comprising a mix of two and three bedroomed dwellings, were also unveiled by Minister O’Brien at Windmill Drive, Elphin.

All of the properties have been funded through the Social Housing Investment Programme (SHIP) and delivered by Roscommon County Council’s Housing Department.

In the last twelve months, Roscommon County Council has developed 91 housing units. The local authority says that it is continuing to deliver homes through multiple delivery streams including direct build, turnkey projects, regeneration projects and through Approved Housing Bodies.

Speaking during his visit, Minister O’Brien remarked: “I am delighted to be in Roscommon today to see the various schemes which Roscommon County Council has championed come to fruition. I am very conscious that the 50 or so homes I have visited today are home to more than one hundred people and that’s what matters.

“These homes are delivering life changing opportunities for people and it’s our job to ensure we deliver more. Under Housing for All we will continue to work in partnership with local authorities and use every tool available to us to increase housing supply and build on this momentum,” said the Minister.

Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council, Shane Tiernan said the three announcements “are raising the bar in terms of residential design that integrates sustainable communities as a fundamental principle. They also set a very high standard for future housing developments.

“I wish to acknowledge the hard work of the housing team together with the many stakeholders involved in bringing these projects to fruition.

‘’These developments will provide much needed homes for households on the waiting list, ensuring access to secure, good quality housing at an affordable price and in a sustainable manner. I wish the new tenants all the best in their new homes,” said Mr Tiernan.

Cathaoirleach Cllr John Keogh commented: “This investment in communities harnesses a sense of local pride and enthusiasm to create a prosperous and vibrant locality.

“In all, 49 housing units are being officially unveiled today by Minister O’Brien. I would like to thank the Minister and his Department for their support in delivering these projects,” said Cllr Keogh.
