Tributes paid following passing of prominent Roscommon businessman

The Late Liam Fleming.

Extensive tributes are being paid following the passing of prominent Roscommon Town businessman, Liam Fleming, who was in his 90th year.

In a social media message, the Fleming family said it was deeply saddened to announce the passing of Liam Fleming, beloved husband, father, and proud proprietor of Fleming’s SuperValu, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.

The family said: “Liam dedicated his life to serving the people of Roscommon, both through his family and his work. Since 1972, he has been at the heart of Fleming’s SuperValu on Main Street, Roscommon, a business he nurtured from its early days as the VG into a cornerstone of the local community.

“Over the decades, Liam provided employment and opportunities to countless young people and students, many of whom began their working lives under his guidance. His commitment to his staff, customers, and community was unwavering, and his contribution to Roscommon town is immeasurable.

“Liam will be remembered not only as a dedicated businessman, but as a generous, kind-hearted man who gave so much of himself to the town he loved. His legacy will live on through his family, his business, and the many lives he touched.

“He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the wider Roscommon community,” stated the Femily family.

Liam (Roscommon Town/Ballinlough) passed away peacefully in the wonderful care of the incredible team at the Roscommon Hospice, surrounded by his loving family, after a long life well lived. Predeceased by his grandson Oscar Brehony and brothers Oliver and Brian.

Dearly missed by his loving wife Lilian, adored daughters Ríona, Eustelle, Lisa, Fiona, sons Shane and Aiden. Deeply regretted by his sons-in-law Leo (McGuinness), Garreth (Carroll), Robert (Tilson), Michael (Brehony), daughter-in-law Orla (Thompson), much loved grandchildren Della, Theo, Roddie, Síoda, Jack, Dylan, Daniel, Simone, Liam, William, Isobel, Scott, Emma and Eloise, sister Patricia (Gill) sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Liam will repose at Smyth’s Funeral home, Roscommon (F42 NH27) on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Funeral Mass will take place in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Roscommon on the morning of Friday, September 5th at 11 a.m., Burial afterwards in St. Coman’s Cemetery.
