Tributes have been paid to a local volunteer whose infectious, cheerful, warm, and happy demeanour shaped Kiltrustan Sports Club for many years.

The club posted a heartfelt tribute to its Chairperson Timmy Beirne of Grange, Strokestown, on social media, saying that his unexpected passing would leave a “gaping hole” on the committee.

“Timmy joined the committee following in the footsteps of his late parents Rose and Timmy Beirne who were founding members.

“Never one to want to put himself out in the limelight or take any recognition, he toiled away quietly in the background with his infectious, cheerful, warm, happy demeanour shaping our group for the better.

“He was instrumental in the improvements made over the last few years. He chaired meetings in his own relaxed way and his 'can do attitude' had problems solved with an ‘I'll look after that’, and sure enough they were,” recalled the club.

The tribute continued by noting that the late Timmy Beirne was a “community and family man at heart”.

“He organised a celebratory committee meal out only last month with chat of how we push on into the future. It may take us time to appropriately commemorate his memory and legacy as a long-standing committee member and chairperson in our small club, but honour it we will,” vowed the sports club.

The late Timmy Beirne is survived by his loving wife Connie and daughter Maisie, brothers Gerry and Mark, sister Sunniva (Tiernan), nieces, nephews, aunt Sheila, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives, neighbours and many friends. He is predeceased by his parents Timmy and Rose, and by his sister-in-law Alice.
