Tributes have been paid to a well-known local funeral director who has passed away in his 90th year.

Tom Smyth of Smyth's Funeral Directors, Roscommon Town, was described as a “pure gentleman with a generous heart”.

In a statement on social media, Smyth’s Funeral Directors said: “Today our post is slightly different, today it’s our door that has been hit.

“Tom Smyth, who was the face of Smyth Funeral Directors for so many years sadly departed this world on Thursday evening. Like all the families that he supported over the years, the loss is now ours.

“We sincerely thank you all for your compassion and sympathy at this time and we also want to thank you all for the kindness you’ve shown to Tom over the years.” 

The late Tom Smyth is survived by his wife Rena (née Kelly); his children Ann (Galway), Elizabeth (Dublin) and Pat; his sisters Elizabeth (England), Essie (Dublin) and Tresina (Roscommon), sons-in-law Joe Martin and Dan Paulsberg, and his daughter-in-law Gillian.

He was the adoring grandad to Anna Louise, Niall, TJ, Thomas, Adam, Mark and cherished Poppa to Emily. He’ll be sadly missed by his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, good neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

Tom is predeceased by his parents Pat Joe and Rita, sisters Raphael and Rita and his brother Harold.

Reposing at the family Funeral Home, Roscommon F42 NH27 on Saturday evening from 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.. Removal to the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon, on Monday morning arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m.. Burial afterwards in St. Coman’s Cemetery.
