Uisce Éireann highlights investment in County Roscommon projects

Uisce Éireann has welcomed the publication of the latest Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report on wastewater treatment plants, highlighting successful County Roscommon projects. Within the report, the EPA highlighted the completion of works in Roscommon Town.

“Cleaner waters, a healthier environment and more resilient wastewater services are making a real difference for communities across County Roscommon, thanks to continued investment in local wastewater infrastructure,” the utility company said. It added that it was delivering real improvements locally with work underway on a €3.8m wastewater upgrade for Ballaghaderreen.

“This local progress is reflected in the EPA report, which shows that 93% of Uisce Éireann’s wastewater treatment plants nationally are now compliant with EU standards. We invested €454.4 million in wastewater services during 2025,” a statement from Uisce Éireann said.

“This summer Uisce Éireann turned its attention towards Ballaghaderreen. The plant upgrade will enhance key wastewater treatment assets, improve operational performance and resilience, and support compliance with environmental requirements.

Works include the construction of a new storm tank, upgrades to the wastewater treatment process, improvements to pumping infrastructure and enhancements to monitoring and operational control systems. Together, these improvements will enhance the reliability and efficiency of the wastewater treatment infrastructure while continuing to safeguard local waterways and the surrounding environment. The works are expected to be completed in autumn 2027.”

The company said that while improvements were making a real difference locally, it recognised there was more work to do.

Niall Horgan, Uisce Éireann’s Wastewater Compliance Senior Manager, said:

“Our wastewater treatment plants and services are vital to people’s quality of life, and that is what drives our work every day.

“The progress we are seeing in Co Roscommon shows what sustained investment can deliver for communities and the environment. We have made significant progress in recent years, but we know there is more to do. We are continuing to invest in communities right across the country, modernising wastewater services, protecting local waterways and ensuring communities can grow and thrive while safeguarding the environment.”

Across Ireland, Uisce Éireann invested €454.4 million in wastewater infrastructure during 2025, an increase of more than €120 million compared with the €333 million invested in 2020.

Total wastewater investment since then has exceeded €2.5 billion, helping to modernise services in communities nationwide.
