Volunteers needed to befriend nursing home residents for a few hours a week

Minister of State for Older People Kieran O’Donnell and Paddy Joe Burke, Age Friendly Ambassador, Roscommon at Shannon Lodge Private Nursing Home in Rooskey.
Volunteers are needed to befriend older women in several nursing homes in Roscommon, with a minimum commitment of just two hours per week.
The role involves a minimum of two hours a week and includes activities such as befriending a resident and engaging in shared interests like reading, listening to music or simply having a chat.
The aim of these interactions is to help promote wellbeing and positive mental health among nursing home residents.
This new initiative, launched recently in Roscommon, will bring these volunteer befrienders and other community-based supports to women living in long-term residential care in Counties Roscommon and Leitrim.
This initiative will benefit 200 nursing home residents over an 18 month period.
There are three locations in County Roscommon offering this programme, two nursing homes in Roosky and in Boyle along with the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon Town.
The Community Linkage Project, as it is called, is managed by Age Friendly Ireland and funded by the Women’s Health Fund in the Department of Health.
