'Waters are at an extremely high level' at Lough Funshinagh

Flooding at Lough Funshinagh, South Roscommon, last year

The water levels at Lough Funshinagh have risen sharply since the end of October, data from Geological Survey Ireland has shown. This increase has also been felt on the ground, with the Lough Funshinagh Flood Action Committee posting a video yesterday, showing flooded fields and a flooded stretch of road.

“Stress and anxiety has revisited the locals living around Lough Funshinagh,” the committee said. “It's November 23rd and waters are at an extremely high level.

“Farms, farmyards and public roads may now need closing as a result of the ongoing flooding at the lake. Farmers are now in the process of moving livestock as waters advance on their farms. Once again we are facing into 5 months of winter with a considerable risks to lives and livelihoods, as well as homes and farms flooding. We are calling for the political leaders to re-engage on this crisis and deliver on their promises made in May 2024.”

The committee has expressed disappointment at the up to 12 month delay to submit a planning proposal for the permanent solution to flooding at the lake.
