Boyle and Four Roads claim U-14 LGFA titles, underage finals continue

CAMOGIE: Congratulations to the U-12 Boyle Cheetahs who took home the Division 2A title after a tough game, after extra time, against Pádraig Pearses last weekend. Hard luck to the Boyle Leopards who lost out to a strong Four Roads team in their Division 4A final. The U-16 team will be up against Four Roads in the Division 1A final on September 10th in Tulsk at 6.30 p.m..
LGFA: It has been a great week for Boyle LGFA. On Thursday evening in Ballyleague, after a very competitive game of football, the U-16 girls won the Division 1B final against Clann na nGael. Then, on Sunday, the U-14 girls took on a strong Clann na nGael team in the Division 1A final. It was a tremendous game of football, with both teams giving everything they had (see match report, page 2). Boyle trailed at the end of the first half of extra time but they dug deep and put absolutely everything into the final half to emerge victorious at the final whistle. A huge congratulations to all the players and managements on two well-deserved victories. A massive thanks to all those who turned out to support both teams.
ANNIVERSARY: On Saturday, September 12th, Boyle LGFA will host a programme of events to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The day will commence with the annual Daly Cup tournament in the Abbey Park, with local U-13 teams participating. This will be followed at 5.30 p.m. by the Adrian Brogan Memorial Walk, with donations going to Mayo Roscommon Hospice. Registration on the day from 4.45 p.m. at the Abbey Park, with refreshments and memories in the clubhouse after the walk. Everyone is welcome.
UNDERAGE FOOTBALL: The U-14 Division One boys will take on Kilmore/Shannon Gaels in the Sheild final on September 10th in Croghan at 6.30 p.m.. The minor team will be up against St. Brigids in their championship final on Sunday, September 13th, in Enfield at 3 p.m..
JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS: The Cooney Motors sponsored Junior A team have their championship quarter-final against St. Ronan’s on September 11th in Strokestown at 8 p.m..
LOTTO: Lucky Dip winners in last weekend’s lotto draw were Des Egan, Junior McLoughlin, Edmund Betagh, Jonathan Hester, and Tom Vaughan. Next weekend’s draw takes place in Mulvihill’s for a jackpot of €10,600.

Well done to the U-10 teams who had a good blitz against St. Barry’s and Kilmovee Shamrock during the week. Good luck to the junior team who play Kilbride in Kilbride in the fourth round of the junior championship on Friday evening at 8 p.m.. Good luck to the Yellow U-14 team who play Roscommon Gaels in the championship quarter-final in Elphin on Tuesday evening. Good luck to the U-16 team who play Western Gaels in the championship quarter-final in Elphin on Friday evening.
ROUNDERS: On Sunday week last, the Elphin intermediate ladies’ rounders team made the journey to Abbotstown, Dublin, for the All-Ireland final, where they faced a strong Galway City Raparees side. From the very first ball, Elphin showed incredible determination and composure. It was a tense, tightly contested game, with both teams battling hard to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Elphin’s fielding was outstanding, keeping their Galway opponents under serious pressure and not allowing them to take home a single run from their second, third or fourth innings. Elphin kept chipping away, staying right with Galway throughout the game and ensuring there was very little between the sides. Then came Elphin’s final batting innings — and what a moment it was. The team dug deep, finding the runs when it mattered most and taking the lead heading into Galway’s final bat. Galway entered their final innings needing just two runs to win. The tension was unreal. Every ball mattered. Every player gave absolutely everything. It was a final that went right down to the wire and showcased everything that makes rounders so special — teamwork, determination, skill, resilience and never giving up until the very last ball. A huge congratulations to both teams on an incredible All-Ireland final, and to the Elphin ladies who can be so proud of the fight and heart they showed on the biggest stage.
LGFA NEWS: It was another very busy and successful week for Four Roads LGFA, culminating in a memorable Sunday which saw the U-14 girls crowned Division 2B county champions and the junior team produce an impressive championship performance.
CHAMPIONS: The U-14 footballers captured the Division 2B title following a thrilling and closely contested final against Padraig Pearses in Enfield. Four Roads made a flying start, registering 2-2 inside the opening ten minutes, with Roisín Concannon prominent during an excellent opening spell. But, by the midway mark, the sides were level. With five minutes remaining, Pearses were ahead by two points. Four Roads had to dig deep, with substitutes Darcey Donohoe and Sadie Gately making an important contribution when introduced. Darcey registered a fine score before Roisín Concannon struck a crucial goal to swing the momentum back towards Four Roads. A superb point from Aoibheann Smith helped seal a memorable victory. Goalkeeper Ella Sweeney also produced an outstanding performance. Captain Ria Crosbie had the honour of accepting the cup. Congratulations to the entire panel and management team of Shay, Katie and Sean, and credit also to Padraig Pearses for their contribution to a hugely entertaining final.
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: The junior footballers produced an excellent performance in securing a 3-8 to 0-6 victory against St. Michael’s/St. Ronan’s in the championship. Four Roads played some excellent football. Oonagh Kelly and Mairead Lohan were particularly impressive in defence, while Shauna Fallon led the way in attack, with her relentless workrate rewarded with two goals and a point in the first half. The introduction of Clodagh Finneran and Donna Kelly was key, scoring 1-4 between them. Meabh Finneran scored a brilliant individual point from play to finish. Earlier in the week, the team were defeated by Oran on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-6 victory. Elizabeth Coyle finished with 1-4 for Four Roads, while Shauna Fallon scored two excellent points from play. Before Sunday's game against St. Michael's/St. Ronan's, a minute's silence was observed in memory of Irene Cryan, who was laid to rest on Friday. The thoughts and prayers of everyone in Four Roads are with the Cryan family and everyone in St. Michael's/St. Ronan's at this sad time.
BIG WEEK: The club is heading into one of its most exciting weeks in underage football, and it’s time to turn the parish green and white. The U-16 boys were due to play their Division Two final on Monday, September 7th, in Strokestown. The U-14 boys are at home for their Division Two semi-final on Thursday, September 10th. The minor boys will contest their Division Two final next weekend (details to be confirmed).
LGFA: The U-8 girls took part in an enjoyable blitz on Saturday morning. Well done girls and thanks to Tulsk for hosting. Many thanks also to Castlerea for hosting a wonderful blitz for the U-10 girls on Saturday morning. Both Kilbride teams played four games against strong opposition and showed great determination and skill in each game. The U-12 girls will be in action on Wednesday against Strokestown. Good luck wishes are also extended to the minor ladies and their management team who face Michael Glaveys in their quarter-final on Tuesday in Ballinlough at 6.30 p.m.. The junior men’s team were defeated St. Michael’s, 0-14 to 0-9, in their second group game of the Junior B championship in Ballinlough last Sunday. They will play Kilmore in their final group in Ballinlough this Sunday at 2 p.m.. A win will secure a place in the quarter-finals.
LGFA NEWS: The intermediate ladies’ footballers suffered a 6-8 to 2-5 defeat against Kilbride in the fourth round of the championship in Ballinlough on Sunday. They play Western Gaels in their last round robin game in Ballinlough this Sunday at 11 a.m.. A win, and if other results go their way, may mean qualification for the semi-finals. A defeat, however, could mean relegation to Junior A. The junior team suffered a heavy defeat to Roscommon Gaels in Ballinlough last Sunday, a result that ended their hopes of making the semi-finals. They play their final game away to Pádraig Pearses B on Saturday at 6 p.m.. The minors play Kilbride in their Division Two championship quarter-final in Ballinlough on Tuesday at 6.30 p.m.. COUNTY FINAL: Congratulations to the Michael Glaveys/Éire Óg U-14 boys’ team that have qualified for the Division Two Championship final after defeating Castlerea 3-7 to 2-8 in the semi-final in Ballinlough last Thursday. They will play Tulsk or Clann na nGael in the final (details to be confirmed).
TEAM OF THE YEAR: Congratulations to Helena Cummins on making the TG4 Ladies’ Intermediate Team of the Championship. It’s a well-deserved accolade for Helena after some great displays on Roscommon's route to All-Ireland glory last month. Helena will receive her award alongside her team-mates on Friday, October 9th, in Croke Park.
SYMPATHY: Michael Glaveys GAA Club extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Eoin Doyle, and to all in Ballyhaunis GAA Club, Cloonfad Uunited and Cloonfad National School, following his sudden and tragic passing at such a young age. The club’s thoughts and prayers are with Eoin’s family, friends, team-mates, classmates and the wider community at this incredibly difficult time.
UPDATE: The U-19 footballers defeated St. Gabriel’s by 6-10 to 2-9 in the fifth round of the championship at Kilconnell on Wednesday last. Leading at half time, the lads managed the game well in the second half, despite playing against the wind. The U-17 footballers were defeated by Caltra, 1-13 to 0-8, in their championship quarter-final on September 6th. The team were behind, 1-8 to 0-1, at the break, and Caltra managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over in the second half to secure the win. The U-17 footballers defeated Ballinasloe, 5-12 to 2-5, in a rescheduled match at Glinsk. The teams were level at the break, 3-1 to 2-4, but Northern Gaels utilised the elements in the second half to run out comfortable winners. The final group game against St. Gabriel’s takes place in Kilconnell on Tuesday, September 8th. The club thanks its supporters for turning up to get behind the various Northern Gaels teams.

The men’s junior team were well-beaten by Pádraig Pearses in the Junior B championship. IRENE CRYAN, RIP: It was with great sadness that the club learned of the passing of Irene Cryan — wife of Michael and loving mother to Conor, Sinead and Aoife. Irene left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of meeting her. She will be sorely missed. The club extends its sincere condolences to Michael, Aoife, Conor, Sinead and the extended Cryan and Barry families at this very difficult time. May Irene's gentle soul Rest In Peace. The club would like to sincerely thank all its members who helped out in any way during what was a very sad and difficult week for the community. Whether it was helping with the catering, car parking, grave digging or assisting in any other way, the support, time and willingness to help was greatly appreciated. SYMPATHY: A minute’s silence was observed before the Junior B championship game as a mark of respect to the late Irene Cryan, sister-in-law of David Cryan, who passed away recently. The club extends its deepest sympathy to Michael, David and the extended Cryan and Barry families on Irene's untimely passing.
SENIOR STATUS SECURED: The senior men’s footballers retained their senior football championship status for 2027 with a 2-16 to 1-14 victory against St. Faithleach’s in Tulsk on Saturday evening (see match report, page 10). Congratulations to the team and management.
