The Elphin Junior team played out a hard-fought draw against Boyle, 1-7 to 0-10. There was little between the teams with both sets of players working hard in what was an entertaining game. Hard luck to the U-13 team that were narrowly beaten by a very strong Western Gaels side in the Shane Beirne Shield Final. Wishing Henry Gunne a speedy recovery and a special word of thanks to all supporters on the day.

KILBRIDE LGFA

The senior ladies travelled to Boyle on Sunday morning for round five of the championship without Aisling Hanly, who was on International futsal duty. Boyle were out of the blocks from the minute the game commenced and were well ahead at the halfway mark, 1-10 to 0-1. The Kilbride girls knew they were in real trouble and improved in the second half. Boyle kicked on and showed that they will be well in contention when it comes to the knockout stages. KILGLASS GAELS

ADULT FOOTBALL: The Kilglass Gaels men had a great victory over the neighbours on Sunday in the quarter-final of the championship. Kilglass got off the mark quick but failed to keep up the tempo and allowed Barry’s to go in one point up at the break. The second half saw the lads come into their stride and with a great interception in the defence, worked the ball to the forwards for a crucial goal. It finished 2-11 to 0-8 (see match report). Kilglass Gaels now face St. Michael’s in three weeks’ time.

UNDERAGE: The minor team are also in to the county final after beating St. Faithleach’s last weekend. The U-12 girls claimed the Daly cup in Boyle last Saturday also.

OTHER NEWS: Niamh Hall and Eoin Grehan were crowned Connacht champions at the weekend in Handball. Hard luck to the other competitors. Congratulations to Kilglass men’s player Kevin Feeney and his stunning wife Charlene who got married last Friday. Wishing you all the best for the future. ORAN

U-14 CHAMPIONSHIP: The U-14s had a hard-fought victory over Kilglass/St. Barry’s in Ballyleague on Thursday evening. Against a very talented Kilglass/St. Barry’s side, the opposition got off to the better start with a well-taken goal. Oran fought back with great scores from Coman Shaughnessy and Conor Muldoon. Harry McDermott, Evan Featherston and Cillian Hoare were rocks throughout. Joe Coyne and Dan Monaghan both had fine games but the day belonged to James Murray who was superb throughout, magnificent in the air, brilliant with the ball and wonderful to supply ball to the other players. Oran now have a county final to look forward to, well done to everyone involved.

U-20 SEMI-FINAL: Hard luck to Oran/St.Croan’s U-20s who lost out to a strong Éire Óg/Michael Glaveys in the championship semi-final. It was a tense game which was tight all the way through, with Éire Óg/Michael Glaveys getting a goal at the death to put distance between the teams. Scores from Kevin Lambert (0-2) and one each from Shane Walsh, Micheál Hussey and Eoghan Murray were not enough for the two parishes.

ROSCOMMON GAELS

HURLING: The U-12 Hurlers ended their season on Saturday last on a high following a comfortable win against Four Roads in the B Hurling Final in Ballyforan. The boys were very disappointed with their loss in the semi-final the previous week against Tooreen but they dusted themselves off and came out with a fighting spirit for the B Final and got their win. That’s it for the 2023 season, thank you to Nicola Crosbie and her management team of Teresa Hession, Dion Hegarty and Pádraig O’Rourke, Ricki Moran and Ronan Clogher for the endless hours of training and support they have provided to the group of hurlers. The U-16 Hurlers finished off their championship on Sunday last in the semi-final stages following a defeat by Four Roads.

CAMOGIE: The U-14 Camogie Finals were held in Lisnamult on Saturday last. The Roscommon Gaels Eagles and Hawks teams experienced very tough luck in what were two great games for onlookers. The girls played their hearts out and had great starts in both finals. The wind was a factor in the second half in both matches. The Eagles went very close, however Athleague came out on top by four points at the end. The Hawks were extremely unlucky to be defeated by one point when Four Roads scored their only goal in injury time, despite the brave efforts of everyone to stop them. Sincere thanks to Fiona and her team of six coaches who have shown huge dedication to this group of 42 girls over a long season, who were league winners earlier in season. A lot of work went into organising today’s finals also so a huge thank you to parents who answered Fiona’s call and came on board to help in so many ways.

FOOTBALL: The senior footballers are preparing for their championship quarter-final clash with neighbours Oran on Sunday next in Kiltoom at 1 p.m.. Best of luck to all the team and management. The team are thankful for all the support throughout the championship so far. The Junior A Footballers had a disappointing defeat on Saturday in Frenchpark against St. Michael’s, which brings their championship to a close for the season. The U-12 purple and yellow squads played their second games of the summer league out in Mulhern Park against St. Ciaran’s on Sunday last. The boys didn’t come out on top on this occasion. Keep working hard lads.

ST. BARRY’S

MARATHON: Just over two weeks to go to Marathon day on October 8th, places are filling fast for the usual 3/4 Marathon, Half Marathon and 8k runs. Resister now at https://www.njuko.net/tarmonbarry2023/ JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: St. Barry’s adult men’s junior championship campaign petered out in disappointing fashion in the end with defeat to Kilglass in Kilmore. Midway through the second half, a point separated the sides following a good long-range Eoin Diffley point, but it was to be St. Barry’s last score of the game as Kilglass took control of the last quarter. St. Barry’s started slowly. After an early Kilglass point, the kick out strategy was malfunctioning. The lads eventually got going and had the better of the half. Scores from Keenan, Finbar, Kyle, and Ciaran McManus left the sides level, before a good Keith McGowan point after a good team move left it 0-5 to 0-4 at the break. The teams were canceling each other out after the break, and a second Cawley free tied it at six apiece on 42 minutes. The decisive score came soon though, as a good Kilglass team move ended with a cross being fisted to an empty Barry’s net. St. Barry’s did score two quick points in response, but couldn’t summon the energy to maintain a strong challenge, especially around the middle third, and Kilglass finished the game stronger. An injury time goal put a bad look on the scoreboard, but Kilglass deserved their win, now progress to meet St. Michael’s in the semi-final (see match report).

SUMMARY: So, the year ends for the lads. Thanks to all for their efforts during the year, and to Colin, Gerry, Peter, and everyone else who helped in the backroom during the year. The manner of the defeat will be hard to take this evening, but it’s clear that there are plenty of reasons to be positive after the year. After a couple of years without a championship win, the lads were very competitive, and progressed comfortably from the group. A number of younger players have emerged and made their mark during the year. ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ as they say, but with these guys bedding in along with the more experienced players in the squad, there is plenty of hope for the future.

LADIES BEATEN: The adult ladies were beaten by Éire Óg in Loughglynn on Sunday morning in the intermediate championship.

SPONSORSHIP: Thanks to Stephen Coy, The Shannon bar, who presented a set of training top to St. Barry’s adult men’s squad before last week’s Junior quarter-final.

Then on Sunday St. Michael’s hosted Fuerty in the second round of the Junior B Championship in Ardcarne Park. Another excellent opening period had the lads 2-10 to 0-2 ahead at the interval. The visitors fought their way back into the contest with two goals within minutes of the restart and were competitive throughout a high quality game which nonetheless finished in a convincing win for the home team, St. Michael’s 3-17 Fuerty 2-8. St. Michael’s play St. Aidan’s in the third round at 1 p.m. on Sunday 24th in Ardcarne Park.
