A memorial statue of double All-Ireland winning football captain Jimmy Murray will be officially unveiled in his native Knockcroghery by GAA President Jarlath Burns in December.

Mr Burns will be the guest of honour at a special ceremony in the village on Sunday, December 1.

It will be a special day of celebration for a GAA icon who captained the county to historic All-Ireland SFC titles in 1943 and 1944, the only Roscommon man to do so.

Jimmy, or ‘Jamesie’ as he was known to many, passed away in 2007, in his 90th year.

A press launch outlining the full schedule for the day will take place on Friday, November 15th in Murray’s Bar, Knockcroghery.

Planning permission was approved last month for the development which will be located in the centre of the village, and will include new access footpaths.

The monument is carved out of Roscommon limestone donated by Lecarrow Quarries, and local stonemason Mark Feeley was commissioned to undertake the project.
