Roscommon have been dealt a blow ahead of Sunday's Connacht SFC semi-final against Mayo after Daire Cregg's red card against New York was upheld on Monday evening, the Roscommon Herald understands.

The Boyle forward appealed his sending-off to the GAA's Central Hearings Committee, but it is believed he was unsuccessful.

He has been handed a one-game ban and, as it stands, will miss the provincial last four showdown against Mayo in Castlebar on Sunday next.

Cregg was shown a red card by referee Brendan Cawley, who consulted with his linesman after an off-the-ball incident in the final moments of the first half in Gaelic Park.

His absence will be viewed as a major setback as Roscommon look for a hat-trick of championship victories in Castlebar against the "Green and Red".
