Father and son team up as County Roscommon referees
Father and son, Fergus and Nathan Halligan, who were on refereeing duty in Kilbride recently.
A father and son combination were on refereeing duty for two County Roscommon club games at the same venue, and time, recently.
Fergus and Nathan Halligan — from Roscommon Gaels GAA Club — made it a family affair in Kilbride, proving that the “whistle doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
Fergus refereed the Minor Division Two game between Kilbride and Western Gaels in Kilbride, while, on Kilbride’s second pitch, Nathan was in the middle for the U-14 Division Four game between Kilbride and St. Faithleach’s.
Both Fergus and Nathan are officials in both hurling and football.
Roscommon GAA has paid tribute to the father and son combination and wished them all the best on their refereeing journey.
“It’s great to see the next generation of match officials coming through — and a fairly unique occasion to have father and son with a whistle in hand at the same venue on the same day,” commented Roscommon GAA on Facebook.
“We wish Nathan the very best of luck as he begins his refereeing journey, and continued success to Fergus, who no doubt has plenty of advice to pass on along the way.”
