A County Roscommon GAA Club has sent best wishes to its physio after her success with the Leitrim intermediate ladies’ football team in Croke Park this afternoon.

Charlene Tyrell has been the team physio for the St. Michael’s intermediate football panel for the last two years.

Today, in Croke Park, full-back Charlene played a leading role in helping Leitrim land the All-Ireland intermediate football title following their dramatic 3-11 to 3-10 success against Tyrone.

“It’s not like me to be stuck for words. It’s unbelievable. Watching the buzzer tick down, knowing that we had it. We could have been up by ten or a point, it didn’t matter.

"This is my reward. Seventeen years ago, we were here and we did the exact same thing. It’s phenomenal to be here. The support is overwhelming, the whole of Leitrim came out today, and I’m just so proud to be here with this fantastic group of girls,” said 38-year-old Charlene who dedicated the victory to her son Noah who joined her pitchside after the match for the celebrations.

“I’m a single parent. You sacrifice so much and you do so much off the field. He’s (Noah) not into sport but it makes him understand that if you work hard, you can achieve anything. That’s what I pride myself on as a mother, that I’m able to show that to him.

Leitrim were beaten in this year’s Division Four League semi-final, failed to get promoted but — in one of the rags to riches stories of the year — have come back to become All-Ireland champions, beating Roscommon twice along the way.

The All-Ireland champions will be welcomed back to Carrick-on-Shannon this evening.
