Roscommon footballer hoping to mastermind Leinster schools’ success

Coláiste Mhuire senior football manager, Brian Murtagh, lifts the Jamesie Murray Cup with his brother Diarmuid after St. Faithleach's were crowned Roscommon intermediate football champions in 2021.
A County Roscommon footballer will be hoping to mastermind provincial bliss for his school in Leinster on Saturday next.
St. Faithleach’s player, Brian Murtagh, is the manager of the Coláiste Mhuire team from Mullingar that will aim to win the Br Bosco Cup for only the second time in the school’s history when they face Árdscoil na Trionoide from Athy in Saturday’s final at Glenisk O’Connor Park, Tullamore, at 1 p.m..
Current St. Aidan’s junior footballer manager, Kieran Kelly, is also part of the Coláiste Mhuire management.
Brian’s younger brothers, Ciaráin and Diarmuid, are part of the current Roscommon senior football panel. Alongside Diarmuid, Brian captained St. Faithleach’s to Roscommon and Connacht intermediate glory in 2021.
Coláiste Mhuire defeated Maynooth Educational Campus by 2-11 to 0-8 in their semi-final, while Árdscoil na Trionoide saw off Moate Community School — jointly managed by Pádraig Pearses and Roscommon senior footballer, Niall Daly, and former Roscommon selector, Peter Tormey — by 0-12 to 0-4.
Another County Roscommon connection with the Coláiste Mhuire team is star forward Will Scahill — son of former Castlerea St. Kevin’s footballer, David Scahill, who was also part of the Roscommon Masters team that reached last year’s All-Ireland final.
Coláiste Mhuire last won the Leinster Senior A Schools’ final in 1983 when they defeated Marist College, Athlone, by 1-5 to 0-5.
