A County Roscommon player’s last-ditch block helped University of Limerick claim their first Division One Senior Football League title on Wednesday evening.
St. Barry’s defender Cillian Campbell’s defining intervention, when he cleared the ball off the line in the closing stages, was key in the Limerick outfit’s 2-20 to 2-16 triumph against a University of Galway side that featured Pádraig Pearses duo, Conor Harley and Eoin Colleran, alongside Rory Hester from Western Gaels.
Overall, the all-action Campbell enjoyed a terrific game, while Colleran hit 1-2 for the University of Galway.
Campbell’s upward trajectory has been evident in recent seasons.
In March 2024, he was on the UL Freshers team that won the All-Ireland B Championship. He was also part of the Roscommon U-20 football panel that claimed Connacht championship honours before going on to win a Junior A Football Championship title with St. Barry’s later that year.
Earlier this year, he was part of Cian Smith's Roscommon U-20 football squad that were edged out by Mayo in the Connacht final at Tuam Stadium.
