Golf notes: Padraic Gorham picks up Captain's prize in Castlerea

LADIES’ RESULTS: Nora Costello Memorial Trophy on Saturday, August 26th, and Tuesday, August 29th, 1st, Frances McGettigan (23), 39 pts; 2nd, Ann Geoghegan (2), 37 pts; 3rd, Deirdre Connolly (24), 36 pts (B9); 4th, Angela Veldon (27), 36 pts. Antoinette Brew (23), 19 pts, won the nine-hole competition on Saturday, August 26th, and Tuesday, August 29th. The results of the ’97 Club competition on Thursday, August 31st, were: 1st, Sheila Geraghty, 27 pts; 2nd, Anna Walsh, 26 pts (B3).

BOYLE

RESULTS: The results of the 18-hole VPar competition on August 26th and 27th were: 1st, Owen O'Donohoe; 2nd, Tim Hester; 3rd, Frank Flanagan (all one up).

FIXTURES: The men’s Thursday competitions will continue for a few more weeks as a nine-hole stableford. The Lady President’s Prize to the Ladies takes place on Sunday next, September 10th. Best of luck to this year’s Lady President and hard-working Competition Secretary, Mary O'Hara. There will be a men’s 18-hole stableford on September 16th and 17th. The men will play for the King Cup on the following weekend.

CAPTAIN’S OUTING: Following on the very successful relaunch of the captain’s outing last year, another trip is being planned, with the most likely dates being one of the first two weekends in November. The club will release more details when it has definite dates and venues.

CARRICK-ON-SHANNON

LOTTO LUCK FOR DYLAN: The club’s lotto jackpot of €1,250 was won by Connacht junior cup team captain, Dylan Beirne. The club congratulates Dylan on his winnings. Anyone who would like to join the lotto should contact Ann Cox or Sheila Carney.

OARSMAN MAHER CUP: The ladies’ competition last weekend was sponsored by the Maher family from the Oarsman Restaurant and Bar, Carrick-on-Shannon. The club thanks them for their very generous sponsorship. Results were: 1st, Sinead Weir, 36 pts; 2nd, Phil Emmett, 35 pts; Gross, Siobhan Talbot, 19 pts; 3rd, Yvonne McMahon, 35 pts.

GENTS’ RESULTS: The club would like to thank Michael Keville from M.K. Financial Services, Boyle, County Roscommon, for his very generous sponsorship of the gents’ competition held over the weekend of August 27th. Results were: Gross winner, Brendan Boyle, 35 pts; Division One winner, Ciarán Curley, 39 pts; Division Two winner, Paddy Murray, 36 pts; Division Three winner, Cathal Dowd, 39 pts.

GRAND FINALISTS: Congratulations to Phil Emmett and Phil McWeeney who came third with 45 points in the NCBI Countess of Granard Regional final in Strandhill on August 28th. Warrenpoint took first and Castlebar were second. As a result, the Carrick ladies will be off to the Grand final in Mullingar on September 15th. The club wishes them every success. Everyone in Carrick Golf Club is very proud of their achievements.

SENIORS: The overall winner last Thursday was Chris Lowe with a score of 41 points. Category One winner was Gerry Emmett with 40 points. Category Two winner was Charlie Farrell with 37 points. Category Three winner was Michael Duignan with 36 points. The front nine was won by Seán McMonagle with 21 points. The back nine was won by Dermot Monaghan with 19 points. Carrick Golf Course will be closed for maintenance next week, but golf takes place as usual next Thursday for the seniors in Ballinamore. First tee at 9 a.m..

OTHER RESULTS: Results of the Mulvihill Cup were: 1st, Greg Bruen with 43 points; 2nd, Gerry McLoughlin with 39 points; Cat 1, Anto Kelly with 36 points; Cat 2, Willie Gannon with 37 points; Cat 3, Micheal Moran with 38 points. The results of the Audrey O'Donoghue competition were: 1st, Dympna McGarry, 66 nett; 2nd, Maura Kelly, 67 nett. Teresa Meaney has won this year’s Cahill’s matchplay. Maura Kelly was the winner of the Mulvihill Cup with 37 points. Donna Hannelly, 17 points, captured the nine-hole qualifying club competition on August 17th. The winner on August 24th was Elizabeth Devine,19 points.

RESULTS: Men’s 18-hole competition sponsored by Down the Hatch on September 2nd and 3rd, winner, W. Doyle (12), 40 pts; Cat 1, J. McGahon (10), 40 pts; Cat 2, M. Connaughton (12), 39 pts; Cat 3, B. Mulry (28), 40 pts; Gross, A. Hill (+1), 36 gross points. R. O’Brien won the ladies’ 18-hole competition on August 29th with 33 points. Results of the ladies’ nine-hole competition on August 29th were: 1st, J. Hunt (21), 21 pts; 2nd, M. Brennan (21), 20 pts. Senior men on August 31st, winner, N. Scanlon, 40 pts; Cat 1, F. Nally, 35 pts; Cat 2, C. Doherty, 36 pts; Cat 3, S. Mulhern, 33 pts; Cat 4, T. Costello, 32 pts. Senior ladies on August 31st, 1st, M. McDermott; 2nd, N. McDonagh; 3rd, M. Lalor; 4th, P. Leonard.

CLUB MATCHPLAY: Pat Pierce and Padraic Conlon will play Ollie Dempsey and Paula Miley in the club mixed foursomes final, which is due to be played on September 17th. The TJC O’Keeffe men’s fourball matchplay competition is at the semi-final stages. Daniel Watts and Seamus Connelly will play Brian Feeley and Noel Farrell in the first semi-final, while PJ Moran and Liam McNeill will play Mark Kearney and Brian Cleary in the second semi-final. LADIES’ SENIOR FOURSOMES: There is great excitement building in the club as the ladies’ senior foursomes team and managers prepare to participate in the AIG Women’s Senior Foursomes interclub All-Ireland finals at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club between September 7th and 8th. Roscommon are due to play Belvoir Park Golf Club in the quarter-finals, starting at 8.20 a.m. on Thursday morning. The panel and managers have put a lot of time and effort into preparing for this event and everyone at the club wishes them well. Support would be very much appreciated.
