A local golf course is reputed to have one of the toughest par 3s in the country.
According to the
, the 13th hole in Carrick Golf Club, located between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon, has been selected as one of the top 40 most difficult par 3s in Ireland. The 184 yards par 3 is described as “not as uphill as some on this list but the green is tucked sharply into a small hillside.
“The putting surface is narrow and there is little room to bail-out with bunkers below. Use the bank above the green and hope you don’t get stranded.”
The article states that there are multiple considerations in defining how tough a par 3 can be, with length an obvious and instant challenge, but vast stretches of water, small greens, and heavily shaped greens also need to be considered.
It is estimated that golf courses across Ireland have roughly 1600 par 3s between them, according to the piece.
