Roscommon’s Thomas Higgins has helped Ireland to secure a quarter final spot in the European Amateur Team Championships.

After two days of stroke play, Ireland finished second overall, which means they will face reigning champions Sweden.

The Irish team finished the Stroke Play stage on -25 with England sitting top of the pile on -44 after dominating the action in Killarney.

Higgins carded a one under par round of 71 yesterday (Thursday) while he was the top Irish performer on Wednesday as his -4 round helped his team to a share of third place after the opening day.

The Roscommon golfer will tee off at 3 p.m. today as he aims to help Ireland take a step closer to securing this title for the first time in 17 years.

The last time Ireland won this tournament was in 2008 when Shane Lowry was part of the winning team for a second straight year, having also playing in 2007 when Rory McIlroy was also a member of the victorious Irish team.
