Roscommon set to host top female golfers

Roscommon Golf Club are set to host over 70 of the top amateur golfers in Ireland, starting from tomorrow (Tuesday).
The AIG Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championship takes place at Roscommon Golf Club from Tuesday, July 30th to Friday, August 2nd. It will be the first time the club hosts the Championship, and 78 of Ireland’s top amateur golfers are set to tee off across the week.
Roscommon will be represented on home soil by four competitors. Sinead Benedetti will be the first Roscommon woman to tee off as she starts her round at 8.33 a.m. alongside Laura Webb (Royal Portrush) and Maebh McLoughlin (County Sligo Golf Club).
Olivia Costello commences her round at 9.39 a.m. alongside Katie Poots (Knock). Ruth Lennon will tee off with Joanna Campbell (Royal County Down ladies golf club) and Kanturk’s Aine Martin at 11.07 a.m..
Leah Lennon will be the last Roscommon golfer to start her round as she tees off at 11.29 a.m. alongside Ella Wojnar (Grange Golf Club) and Julie O'Gara (Grange).
There will be two rounds of stroke play qualifying and four rounds of match play lying ahead before champions are crowned on Friday evening.
The competition is set to be even tougher this year with a reduced field of just the top 12 qualifiers advancing to the AIG Close Championship match play rounds while the next 16 best scores will compete for the Amateur Plate.
The AIG Irish Women’s & Girls’ Amateur Close Championship gets underway at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) with Ellen O’Shaughnessy (Co. Louth) and Molly Campbell (Hollinwell) the early morning starters.
