Aoife O’Rourke has expressed her pride in becoming a two-time Olympian, despite her disappointing experience in Paris.
The Castlerea boxer was controversially beaten by Elzbieta Wojcik in her last 16 middleweight bout. But she had been “overwhelmed” by the gratitude she had received since the fight.
“Unfortunately it didn’t plan out the way I had hoped or trained for but I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey,” she posted on social media.
“To my family, friends, coaches, sponsors, support staff and team-mates, I am incredibly grateful for all the love and support I have received from each and every one of you.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all the beautiful cards, signs, flags and bunting you all shared. It is greatly appreciated and it really doesn’t go unnoticed.
“Proud to be a two-time Olympian,” she concluded.
