Two Irish swimmers make 200m breaststroke final

Mona McSharry and Ellie McCartney have qualified for the 200 metres breaststroke final at the European swimming championships.

With some fantastic swimming by the Irish pair, McSharry led throughout, although she was pushed by Alina Zmushka and Anna Elendt, setting a time of 2.23.53.

McCartney, in the second semi-final, recorded a time of 2.24.15, taking two seconds off her time in the heat. 

Speaking on RTÉ, McSharry said her priority now, ahead of tomorrow's final, is "to give the mind a bit of a break".

Earlier, Danielle Hill finished in eighth place in the women's 50 metres final.

Hill was the first of the Irish swimmers to take to the pool in Paris for this evening's races.

Ireland's Jack Kelly finished seventh in the men's 200 metres breaststroke.
