A young County Roscommon swimmer claimed gold and his first national title at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin on Friday.
On day three of the Irish Open Championships and Olympic Trials Cormac Rynn had an outstanding swim in the 400m freestyle super final to claim gold and his first national title in a new Irish junior record of 3:54.06.
It was a first national record for the young man from Derreenavoggy, Arigna in North Roscommon.
Earlier this year Cormac was a winner of a Dermot Earley Bursary, named in honour of one of the county’s finest ever sportsmen.
Cormac (18) created history as the first non-GAA recipient of a Dermot Earley Bursary. A past pupil of Drumshanbo Vocational School, he is currently attending University of Limerick (UL) where he is studying Biological and Chemical Sciences.
He is a member of the Trident Swim Club in Carrick-on-Shannon and is the current Connacht champion in a number of events, having medalled on multiple occasions.
