Tributes have been paid to a County Roscommon teacher who has retired after over 35 years of service.
Martina Mulvey, Coolaphubble, Knockcroghery was the recipient of a series of presentations from parents, pupils and the Board of Management of the 14 teacher Ballybay National School, Kiltoom, to mark her retirement after a period of 35 years on its teaching staff.
The celebrations also included the raising of the school’s 11th Green Flag for Food and Biodiversity. Ms Claire Kelly (Green Schools Coordinator) thanked pupils and staff for their hard work and commitment, which led to the achievement.

Martina Mulvey, retiring deputy principal, had the honour of raising the flag at the special ceremony attended by Fr. Michael McManus, pupils and staff.

A native of Gortnasillagh, Tulsk, she received her early education at Kilmurry National School and the Convent of Mercy, Castlerea. She did her teaching training in the mid-eighties at St Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra. She held various substitute posts in her initial teaching years and after a year attached to the teaching staff of Curraghboy National School, she was appointed to a permanent teaching post at Ballybay National School in 1989.

She had the distinction of being Green School Co-Ordinator at the school for 20 years.
Speaking to the Herald, she said that she wanted to be a national school teacher from the age of four. As a teacher she always had a "great gra" for the Irish language and also science and mathematics.

She will be remembered by the past pupils and parents of Ballybay NS for her undoubted intellect and her natural ease in front of classrooms and her deep care and concern for all pupils entrusted into her professional care.
