Lecture on archaeology of Knockcroghery area

The Scregg portal tomb.

A lecture on the archaeology of the Knockcroghery area will be held on Thursday, March 26th in Culleen Hall.

The lecture will follow a meeting of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society taking place in the hall at 8 p.m.. It will encompass the parishes of Knockcroghery, Rahara and Kilmeane and will be given by Dr Daniel Curley.

The talk will provide a summary of some of the more notable, natural and, particularly, archaeological gems which are located in the parishes of Athleague, Killinvoy, Kimeane and Rahara.

The story will begin in deep prehistory, and journey to the Iron Age. Early historic times will provide the names of people and places to the narrative, and monuments will be coloured by the events which took place there.

This will serve to shine a light on the great heritage of this part of County Roscommon.

Daniel Curley is a graduate of the University of Galway, most recently with a Ph.d in Archaeology. His doctoral research was on exploration of the later medieval Gaelic Irish O'Cellaig (O'Kelly) lordship of UI Maine and Tir Maine, modern south Roscommon and East Galway. He is manager of the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre and the secretary of Farming Rathcroghan Scheme CL.G.

All welcome to the lecture.
