Malachy Hand is the second of five nominees who have pulled out of the race to secure a place on Fianna Fáil's General Election ticket in Roscommon-Galway.

Speaking to the Herald, the 2019 Local Election candidate said: “On the basis of the directive issued by Fianna Fáil Headquarters and the National Constituencies Committee (NCC) last night to select only one candidate at the Roscommon Galway constituency selection convention next week, I have withdrawn my name from contesting the convention.

“I would like to once again thank all those who nominated me to contest the convention. Finally, I wish the remaining candidates contesting the convention the very best of luck,” Mr Hand said.

Before the announcement of a one candidate strategy, Castlerea councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice also withdrew his name from the race early yesterday.

It’s not clear yet if the remaining nominee, Cllr John Keogh, has made a decision to put his name forward for the convention, which takes place on Thursday, October 3rd, in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon Town.

It’s expected that a ballot of members to select the candidate will take place first at the convention between 6 and 8 p.m., before the rest of the proceedings gets underway at 8 p.m..
