Local Notes: Brideswell Pattern, Soccer Camp and Bereavements

The Brideswell Pattern Festival Committee is currently completing arrangements for a programme of activities in South Roscommon's most central village from July 24th to July 26th to coincide with the annual pattern at the holy well of St Brigid on Sunday, July 26th. The annual Open Air Mass will be celebrated on Sunday at 12.30 p.m. as is customary and the traditional stations will be recited at 4 p.m.. The series of events over the weekend will get underway on Friday evening with a pebble art class in the marquee and a marquee magic show featuring a magician. A bog walk will also take place on Friday evening and it will leave the Gerry O'Malley Memorial at 7.30 p.m.. On Saturday there will once again be a traditional farmers’ market in the village and a GAA blitz at Cam Community Centre. There will be a road bowling exhibition on Saturday evening commencing at the marquee and Roscommon Drama Group will stage a drama production in the marquee at 8 p.m.. On Sunday morning the activities of the day will kick off with the Camino of St Brigid walk commencing at the Church of the Risen Christ at 9.30 a.m. and arriving in Brideswell to coincide with the Mass being celebrated at 12. 30 p.m..
There will be a family fun day on Sunday and the All-Ireland final will be screened on television in the marquee on Sunday afternoon. A band will also play in the marquee later on Sunday evening. The members of the Brideswell Pattern Festival Committee are: chairperson, Padraig Curley; secretary,, Dermot Fitzgerald; treasurer, Karl Harrison; PRO, Brian Curley and members Derek Grehan, Christine O'Malley, Billy Kelly, Clare Mealiff, Darren Mealiff, Thomas Connor, Tomas Beades and Aidan Curley. Tobar Bride is Brideswell was, according to ecclesiastical records, one of the most celebrated holy wells in Ireland in the 17th century. In the mid-fifties, the Pattern in Brideswell and its associated activities were in decline. The local Curraghboy CC, the late Rev. Brendan Fitzmaurice, set about its revival as a major annual event with the assistance of An Realt in Athlone. In 1957, the Legion of Mary members saw to it that a statue of St Brigid was imported from Italy for erection to coincide with the pattern in the village that year. The Pattern is always marked on the last Sunday in July with the Open Air Mass and the reciting of the traditional stations.
Drum Heritage will host a tour to County Sligo on Sunday, July 19th visiting Lisadell House and Gardens and Carrowmore Megalithic Site. The cost of the bus is €20 per person. The cost of entry to the heritage sites is separate. The bus departs from Drum Heritage Centre at 8 a.m., Drum Community Centre at 8.10 a.m. and will stop in Lecarrow village at 8.30 a.m.. A large number of households in the greater Kiltoom area of South Roscommon were without an electricity supply between 4.30 p.m. and 5.53 p.m. on Wednesday evening, July 1st last. A spokesperson for the ESB has informed the Herald that the outage was caused by "siting defective equipment". She explained that initially 1,792 customers were without a supply, but, subsequently, a supply was restored and some 852 customers were without supply until 5.43 p.m..
The death took place on Thursday, June 25th, at his residence of Mr Tommy (Thomas) Gately, Liswilliam, Dysart. Aged 79 in April last, he had been in ill health a short time and he bore his illness with characteristic resilience. The deceased was a well-known South Roscommon drystock farmer and turf contractor. Of a caring and affable disposition, he was devoted to his immediate and extended family and noted for his sense of neighbourliness in his residential community. He kept abreast of the changing trends in farming over the decades and he was a member of the Dysart IFA branch for a number of years. He was also a lifelong PTAA member. One of his principal hobbies was card playing and he played progressive 25 at venues in Dysart and Four Roads over the years. He was also a competent musician and he played both the accordion and mouth organ. Both himself and his wife Nuala were well known waltzing and jiving couples and they regularly attended at waltzing and jiving events in the region. He supported a number of community and church linked events and a wide range of charitable causes and bequests. He is survived by his wife, Nuala, (nee Finneran, Derryglad, Brideswell); sons, Declan, Funshinagh, Enda, Taughboy; daughters, Mrs Caroline Holland, Funshinagh and Mrs Mairead Moore, Creher, Ballyforan. A member of a farming family of eleven, he is also survived by one sister, Mrs Eileen O'Connor, Rahara; nine grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, June 29th, at the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd, Four Roads, the burial took place in Tisrara Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Francis Beirne, PP, Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara.
The death took place on Monday, June 29th, at his residence of Mr Martin Mannion, Castlesampson, Bealnamullia. Aged 91 on August 2nd last, he was a well-known drystock farmer who was a very competent judge of all livestock, especially cattle and sheep. He took a keen interest in all farming affairs always and kept abreast of the changing trends up until recent decades. Devoted to his immediate and extended family, he was a most obliging neighbour and trustworthy friend. A sports enthusiast, he was a well-known handballer in the decades past and a long-time member of the Taughmaconnell Handball Club. He was also a skilled pool player and he played mainly at McHugh's Tavern, Chapel Street, Taughmaconnell, and he also successfully participated in several pool competitions locally. He was the last surviving member of a farming family of 13 and is survived by his wife, Lily, (nee Harney, Carrowreagh); sons, Michael, Castlesampson; Ronan, Aughrim, Ballinasloe and daughter, Caroline, Castlesampson. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St Ronan's Church, Taughmaconnell, on Wednesday, July 1st, the burial took place in Taughmaconnell Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Sean Neylon, PP, Taughmaconnell.
The soccer camp under the auspices of Moore United Soccer Club will take place from Monday, July 27th to Thursday, July 30th inclusive. The time each day is 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and registration is now open for boys and girls. There will be professional coaching. The death took place at her residence on Tuesday, June 30th, of Mrs Bernadette Dolan, Culliagh, Ballinasloe, who was the former Ms Bernadete Gacquin, Corracoolia, Ballyforan. Aged 90 in February last, she enjoyed the respect and esteem of all those with whom she became acquainted. She had been in ill health for some time and she bore her illness with characteristic dignity. Of a caring and affable disposition, she was a most obliging neighbour and reliable friend. She enjoyed gardening and reading as her main hobbies. A deeply religious person, she espoused Christian values by virtue of everyday example and supported a wide range of charitable causes and bequests down the years. She is survived by sons, Dr David, Ballinasloe and John Wexford. A member of a family of two boys and two girls, she was predeceased one year by her sister, Mrs Teresa Muller, Frankfurt, Germany and is survived by brothers, Thomas, Corracoolia, Ballyforan; James, Leeds; three grandchildren and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Creagh, on Saturday, July 4th, the burial took place in Kilbegley Cemetery.
