The team from St Paul's NS, Castlerea won the Fifth and Sixth Class A Primary Schools' Basketball Competition at The Hub last week. The team members are pictured with coach, Mrs Beatty and principal Mrs Walshe.
The AGM of Castlerea Town Team will take place on Monday, May 25th at 7 p.m. in d’Gaff, Barrack Street. New members are always welcome. The Town Team continues to work on projects and initiatives to support the future development, promotion and enhancement of Castlerea.
The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for May 6th was number 18. Winners were Grace Lyons, Rosaleen Flanagan, Ray Joyce, Michael McGovern, and Norrie Mooney. Each receive €100.
The winning bonus ball number for May 14th was number 13. Winners were Deirdre & Myles Hawkshaw, Mary O’Connell, Jimmy Mannion, Annette Craig, and Breege Hester. Each receive €100.
The Castlerea St. Kevin’s minor boys’ team had a good win over St. Croan’s/Oran in the county minor league at O’Rourke Park on Wednesday, May 12th on the score of 2-13 to 3-4. This was a fine game of football by two very committed teams. There were some fine scores. This was a real team victory for Castlerea with all 17 players playing their part. Team captain Dara Curran was outstanding. The death occurred peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 3rd of Mr Rupert de Lacy Staunton, ‘The Dell', Clonalis, Castlerea. Predeceased by his parents Eva and Maurice, infant son, John, brothers, Charlie and Hugh and his sister-in-law, Mary. Deceased was a kind, gentle and good-humoured person. He was a true gentleman and a good neighbour. He was also very witty and loved to have a conversation. He loved the weekly gatherings at Gerry Beirne’s joinery workshop where all the week’s topics would be discussed. He was a farmer and took great pride in looking after his farm, driving his tractor wearing his special cap. He was a keen golfer with Castlerea Golf Club, Connacht and Ireland and won many competitions with Castlerea Golf Club. He loved to read the daily newspaper. He was a devoted catholic and always carried his rosary beads and prayer book with him. He won the Athlone Scratch Cup in 1965/74/82, Sligo Scratch Cup in 1974, Galway Scratch Cup in 1974 and the Waterford Crystal Carlow Scratch Cup in 1980. He was also a great family man and he adored his grandchildren and loved when they would come to visit him. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Margaret; heartbroken children, daughters, Eva and Rosalind and sons Ian and Declan; his sisters, Ena and Dorothy; adored grandchildren, Matthew, Nathaniel, Samuel, Isabelle, Max, Ivy and Leo; Eva’s partner, Niall and Declan’s wife, Emma; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, relatives, cousins, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed from his home on Friday morning to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr. John McManus, burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea. The Communion reflection ‘Close the gate’ was read by Piece O’Conor Nash. The ceremony was enhanced by the singing of Julia Heaney with Eoin Kenny on the piano. May Rupert rest in peace.
Mr Padraic 'P' McNiff of Glencairn Grove, Sandyford and formerly of Arm Road, Castlerea passed away after a tough illness bravely fought, on Thursday, April 23rd under the dedicated care of the staff of the Beacon Hospital, Sandyford. Predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Maureen (née Coggins) of Arm Road, Castlerea. Deceased was a member of a highly respected family. He was very kind and gentle, always in good humour and very witty. He had many friends and during his long illness they paid him a visit in hospital on many occasions and were with him right up to his passing. He was a keen golfer with Castlerea Golf Club before moving to Dublin. P will be forever missed and eternally loved by his heartbroken and caring wife, Xin and his adoring son, Aaron. He will also be very sadly missed by his sister, Deirdre, Long Island, NY, his nephew Ronan, niece Ciara, all his family and relatives and great neighbours especially the Morans. A memorial service was held at Massey Bros. Funeral Home, Goatstown, Dublin, on Monday, May 11th with burial afterwards at Kilternan Cemetery Park. A Month’s Mind for Padraic will take place at St. Patrick's Church, Castlerea, on Saturday, May 23rd at 8 p.m. May Padraic’s gentle soul rest in peace.
The death occurred peacefully at home after a tough illness, which he fought without complaint, in the wonderful, loving care of his adoring family on Friday, May 8th of Mr Derek O’Kelly Oaklands, Salthill, Galway / Kiltimagh, Mayo and Castlerea. Predeceased by his first wife, Mary (née Geraghty), Swinford, and his nephew, Tony Manson, Dublin. Deceased who was a former member of An Garda Siochana served in Castlerea for many years. He was the driver of the patrol car on that fateful day, July 7th, 1980, when Garda John Morley and Henry Beirne lost their lives. He was a keen sportsman and played golf with Castlerea Golf Club and played football with Castlerea St. Kevin’s and the garda teams. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Maeve (née Kenehan), his twin girls Ashling and Ivana, Eleanor, Derek Jnr. Redmond, and Ruth; brothers, Emmett and Neil; and sisters, Jeanette and Brenda, grandson, Connor; son-in-law, James; brothers-in-law, Ed, Doug and Padraig; sisters-in-law, Marie and Cora; nephews and nieces, Corrine, Laura, Graeme and Emily; his great friends Brian McGranaghan, Mary, Damian, Brendan, Roy, Tom, Martin, Jim, his Garda colleagues, his wide circle of golfing friends and also by the extended Geraghty family. Private cremation took place. May Derek’s gentle soul rest in peace.
