WELL DONE ROSCOMMON PLAYERS

Well done to local players Dylan Ruane, Robert Heneghan and Darragh Heneghan who all played so well in Roscommon’s victory over Mayo in the Connacht semi-final on Sunday last in McHale park Castlebar. Dylan, who is vice-captain, had an exceptional game and ended up scoring three points. Darragh had a brilliant game and caused huge problems for the Mayo defence scoring a goal and three points. Robert had the difficult challenge of leading the full forward line in the absence of Daire Cregg and he did really well scoring a point and setting up a goal. Iain Daly has to take great credit as part of a management team who had their team very well prepared. Iain had great success as former Michael Glavey’s manager leading the club to county and provincial success. A large crowd of supporters attended the match on Sunday including a large local attendance. The players and management are wished every success in the Connacht final against Galway in Dr Hyde park on Sunday week.

GOOD LUCK NIALL

Good luck to Niall Heneghan and the Roscommon U-20 team and management who play Galway in the Connacht final on Wednesday next.

HERITAGE SOCIETY

After the winter break, the Heritage Society has just resumed monthly meetings, having had the first gathering of 2026 on Wednesday last in Templetogher. This was our Annual General Meeting and, as always, it generated much debate and discussion. Secretary Kathleen Heviken gave an excellent, detailed account of all the activities of the past year. She sympathised with all who had suffered bereavements and mentioned in particular two special members who died since the last AGM, president, Maureen Lyons and another key member, Johnny Feeney. Joint treasurer Oliver Lennon, gave a detailed and very positive update on the financial position, having the very welcome news that, despite much expense in the past year, the group is still very comfortably in the black in the Credit Union. In his address as chairperson, Leo Finnegan mentioned some of the great achievements in the past year and welcomed the great cooperation that exists between the various community organisations. He thanked all who had helped during the year, including all the members, the occasional helpers who are always available when required, the RSS supervisor and participants, the generous benefactors who are so forthcoming with their donations and time, and, very importantly also, the public in general for their ongoing support for all our activities. The following officers were elected for the coming year: President, Johnny Collins; Vice-Presidents, Lar Finnegan, Michael Tarmey; Chairperson, Leo Finnegan; Vice-Chairperson, Patrick Collins; Secretary, Kathleen Heviken; Assistant Secretary, Eileen Finnegan; Joint Treasurers, Oliver Lennon, Tom Flynn; PRO, Leo Finnegan. A number of matters on the agenda were addressed. One of the main projects for this year is a Story Map of the locality, which is a joint project between the group and Williamstown Tidy Towns. This project is already underway and much of the funding towards it has been received via grant aid from both Galway County Council and West Midlands Credit Union, all of which is greatly appreciated. In addition, the group is participating in another Story Map, which will cover a large section of County Galway. This is being led by Zena Hoctor who works along with Galway County Council, GRD etc. There will be a piece about Templetogher Heritage Area in this Story Map.

Sympathy was extended to the family, relatives and friends of the late John Fleming, Kilkenny. John, who was affectionately known as Harvey, died in a tragic accident involving a bus near Dublin Airport last week. His wife, Marian is a daughter of Peter and Nonie Dolan, Milltown (formerly Hanley, Castletogher); also to the family, relatives and friends of the late Michael “Hauleen” McDonagh, Tuam, another very talented Galway footballer. RIP John and Hauleen.

HANDBALL NEWS

The handball club’s U-12 boys, Cian Smyth and Mason Feeney were in Moycullen and were representing Galway in the 40x20 Juvenile B Connaught Championship. Cian and Mason made a strong start against Mayo, they took control with their serves and topped Mayo to secure their place in the semi-finals. They then met a strong pairing from Roscommon and had to dig deep to eke out their win to earn their place in the Connacht final. Facing another strong team from Roscommon, the boys rallied with great skill and nailed fantastic kill shots to bring the Connacht gold medals back to Williamstown.
