An Open Mic night In association with Strokestown International Poetry Festival 2025 will be held in Compton’s Bar, Strokestown on Friday, May 2nd. The Open Mic runs the first Friday of every month in Compton’s (Central Bar). Organisers have been delighted with the talent gracing the stage in the last 18months with poets, songwriters, dancers, singers and comedians all taking part. This year a partnership has been forged between Strokestown Open Mic and the Strokestown International Poetry Festival. Working together, the plan is to help raise awareness of the arts within Strokestown and surrounding communities. All are welcome to attend a this special open mic on May 2nd (May Bank Holiday weekend) with spot prizes on the night and a host of poets and song writers both from the locality and the festival. The Strokestown Poetry Festival will be running a series of events, workshops and readings from Friday through to Monday. On Sunday, May 4th, the ‘Mad Mick’ Memorial Committee will host a presentation night in the Silver Eel at 8.30 p.m. when the proceeds of the recent tractor run and auction will be presented to Kiltrustan Heartsafe Group and Strokestown Children’s Playground. Everyone is welcome. There will be music by The Last Chancers.

The death took place recently at the North-West Hospice, Sligo, of Mrs Peggy Neenan (nee Hayden) of Breffni Heights, Carrick-on-Shannon, wife of the late Mr Sean Neenan. A native of Strokestown, she was daughter of the late Mr Brian Hayden and of the late Mrs Maura Hayden (nee Sheeran) (formerly of the teaching staff at Elphin Vocational School). Her family originally resided at Church Street and later at Doon. Following her school days, she joined the Department of Posts and Telegraphs as a telephonist based in Carrick-on-Shannon. It was here that she met her future husband. She was an active member of country markets in the town and of the parish choir. News of her passing in her 87th year was heard of with deep regret among her relatives, former neighbours and many friends. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Criona, sister, Maeve, and her brother, Enda. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Carrick-on-Shannon. Items presented at her Funeral Mass included her cookery book to illustrate her love of cooking, a bright garment to show her love of fashion and her choir book in view of her membership of the parish choir for many years. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Carrick-on-Shannon. She is survived by her daughters, Fiona and Maeve; son, Andrew, and his partner, Cathriona; sons-in-law, Anthony and Michael; grandchildren, Emma, Eilis, Arron, Emmett, Tadhg, and Elva; great-granddaughter, Hannah; sister, Mrs Jo Doyle (Dublin); brother-in-law, Brendan; nieces, nephews and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
Mr Colm McCrann, Elphin Street, Strokestown, has been bereaved by the death of his sister, Mrs Margaret (Pearl) Maher, of Knockaulin Drive, Ferbane, County Offaly, which took place recently. A native of Elphin, she was predeceased by her husband, Michael, daughter, Ursula, grandson, Shay, and sisters, Ursula and Pauline. Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ferbane, and the interment followed in High Street Cemetery. She is survived by her children, Teresa, Dolores, Patrick, Jacinta, Marguerite, Anne, Michelle and Emmett; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, Colm; sons-in-law, Eugene, Larry, John, Anton and Mark; sister-in-law, Ina (Elphin Street); nephews, nieces, extended family and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
The death took place recently at Sonas Nursing Home, Knock, of Mrs Anita Doyle (nee Duke), Claremorris, wife of the late Mr Denis Doyle. A native of Cloonshee, Strokestown, she was daughter of the late Mr Patrick Duke and of the late Mrs Annie Jane Duke (nee Glancy), NT. She was predeceased by her brothers, Aidan and Damien. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Colman's Church Claremorris, and was followed by private cremation. The interment of her ashes will take place at Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin, at a later date. She is survived by her sister, Mrs Mari Conaghan; brother, Bernard; brother-in-law, Paul Conaghan; sister-in-law, Mrs Marie Duke (Cloonshee); nieces, Anita Phillips and Aoife Duke; nephews, Brian, Dara and Coman Duke; and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
Mr Liam Martin Lisroyne, Strokestown, has been bereaved by the sudden death of his sister, Mrs Anne Mulvey, Galway, which took place recently. She was a native of Roscommon Town. She will be missed by her wide circle of friends, work colleagues and her friends in the folk group at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Westside. The Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Seamus Quirke Road, Galway, and the interment followed in St. Coman's Cemetery, Roscommon. She is survived by her daughters, Claire and Jean; their father, Gerry; Claire's partner, Mark; grandchildren, Jason, Ria and Callum; brother, Liam; sister, Mrs Amy Talbot (Athenry); sister-in-law, Josie (Lisroyne); brother-in-law, Gerry; nieces, Aisling, Niamh, Louise, Linda, Ruth and Rhona; nephew, Cian; cousins and the Mulvey family to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
