Due to an upsurge in residential housing in a number of South Roscommon villages there is an urgent need for additional public lighting in the villages and their environs, three South Roscommon councillors confirmed on being contacted by the Herald this week. The councillors also want additional lighting at community centres and specific road junctions. According to Rahara based Independent Cllr Laurance Fallon there currently appears to be a reluctance to extend pubic lighting and he had to work tirelessly to get additional public lighting put in operable form in Athleague village. He is pleased that Rahara has good public lighting but in view of the number of individuals now out walking on the roads as well as walking tracks all additional lighting is to be welcomed and especially on the edges of villages. Cllr Fallon is pleased that the majority of the South Roscommon villages have benefitted from housing schemes in recent decades but would like the additional lighting being provided in the interest of road and public safety issues. Independent Curraghboy councillor Tony Ward would like to see additional public lighting provided on both the Kiltoom and Brideswell road exits from Curraghboy village. He had made representations to have additional public lighting provided at community centres and in both Clonown and Newtowncarbery. He also sought the provision of a public light at the Moyvannion/Newpark junction in Kiltoom as one exits the junction from the St Brigid's GAA Centre to the Athlone/Roscommon road route. He holds the view that elderly people and young people using community centres would appreciate additional lighting as they enter and exit the facilities. South Roscommon Fine Gael Cllr Valerie Duffy, Moore, feels it is important to provide public lighting in public areas and places where people congregate and park. County Roscommon, she explains, is part of the Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Scheme and she has assisted Moore Community Council regarding the replacing of a number of public lights at Moore Community Hall which are LED lights. She has also made representations for additional public lighting at the Drum Community Centre at Summerhill where there is a pedestrian crossing and a regular throughput of people.
