Local Notes: Well Done Lucia, Sets Ceili, Community Choir

Last week Elphin Community College Fifth Year student Lucia Revuelta scooped an award at the Junk Kouture World Final held in Dublin. Lucia’s eco-friendly creation ‘Miss Mares’ was a winner of a Cultural Couture Award. She is pictured her with her team and art teacher Susan Prendergast.

WELL DONE LUCIA 

 Elphin Community College student Lucia Revuelta scooped a major award at the Junk Kouture World Final held in Dublin last week. Lucia’s eco-friendly creation ‘Miss Mares’ was a winner of the Cultural Couture Award, which recognised innovative designs around maritime culture and medical materials. A fusion of Basque and Irish maritime culture, her design is aimed at highlighting the beauty of the ocean while also raising awareness of the impact of pollution on marine life. Her creation was made from aluminium cans, sardine tins and foil. Lucia had a hard-working backroom team of Colm Flanagan, Anna Kuspolova, Abby O’Callaghan and Kaylagh Peaty. The strong tradition of Junk Kouture at Elphin Community College has been led by its art teacher, Susan Prendergast, who helped guide another Junk Kouture project into a world final.

LATE MR JIM OWENS 

The death occurred on February 21st in the loving care of the staff at Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon of Mr Jim Owens, Henbrook, Hillstreet, Carrick-on- Shannon. Predeceased by his parents, Paddy and Kitty, nephew, Kieran and sister-in-law, Geraldine. Much loved brother of Kathleen and Frank. Sadly missed by his loving sister and brother, brother-in-law, Cormac, nephew Niall, nieces, Deirdre, Eimear, Caitriona, Kelley, Rebecca and Hannah, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, relatives, neighbours and his many musical friends. Following Requiem Mass in Aughrim Church on Tuesday last the funeral took place to Aughrim Cemetery.

COUNTDOWN TO ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE 

Elphin's St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of Connacht’s oldest, will take place on March 17th starting at 5 p.m. with €1,200 in prizes - 1st, €500; 2nd, €250; 3rd, €100; 4th, €100, 5th, €50. This year's theme is International, Cultural, Traditional Dance. Categories Best Overall Float, Most Topical, Most Creative, Best School Float, Vintage, Commercial/Agricultural, and Best Cultural Float. There are also prizes for Best Dressed Tractor, Best Dressed Window, and Best Dressed Dog, €50. Also the Most Appropriately Dressed Child, and Best Crazy Hairdo. Free face painting from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m..

CHURCH GATE COLLECTIONS 

Church gate collections in aid of in aid of St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held on March 7th and 8th. Please support.

TOWER BAR SESSIONS 

The Tuesday night traditional music sessions in The Tower Inn, Elphin continue with a big welcome for all musicians and listeners. Come along even if you do not play as you will thoroughly enjoy the night. The Tower invites all musicians, singers and dancers to come along after the St. Patrick's Day Parade for a feast of traditional music. "The Full Irish" is a yearly event starting with a junior session from 6 p.m. and a senior session from 8 p.m.. Everyone is very welcome.

TIDY TOWNS 

Elphin Tidy Town’s clean-up will be held on March 7th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Meet at church car park. Pickers and hi-vis provided. The group needs the support of the community to clean up before St. Patrick’s Day. All welcome.

The annual event is to promote awareness of Fairtrade and a reminder to allto keep the Fairtrade Logo in mind. WINDMILL WHEELERS 

Windmill Wheelers are undertaking a couch to 50 km or 25k in eight weeks programme starting in April. After the eight weeks cyclists will take part in the Windmill Classic on Sunday, June 7th. An information evening will be held on Tuesday, March 10th at 8.15 p.m.. Full training and advice given by members. This is open to complete beginners and returning cyclists. Now is your chance to get fit and enjoy all the benefits of cycling.

MOBILE LIBRARY 

The mobile library visits Elphin every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3.30 p.m..

GAA 8K/5K FUN RUN/WALK

 The annual 8k/5k fun run/walk in aid of Down syndrome will again take place starting in the Orchard Park on Saturday, March 14th 1 p.m., registration from 12 noon. This is an annual family friendly event which always has a good turnout, whatever the weather. All abilities welcome. Prizes for each male and female in 8k and 5k events. Purple clothing optional, supported by Elphin GAA Healthy Club. Admission €10, family €20.

SETS CEILI 

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge Elphin Comhaltas will host a sets ceili with the current All-Ireland Champion Ceili Bank Glor na dTonn in Elphin Community Centre on Saturday, March 14th at 9 p.m..

ADULT SET DANCING CLASSES 

Adult set dancing classes continue every Tuesday at 8.30 p.m. in An Bothar Rua, Elphin. Dancers of all levels welcome - from beginners to advanced dancers. Dancing for the craic not competition. Contact Michael Gunn for information on 086 3122897.

COMMUNITY CHOIR 

Croghan Community Choir meets every Sunday from 8 to 9 p.m. in Croghan Community Centre. The choir sings a variety of songs for the joy of singing. Some members of the choir will travel to perform in the Fingal Festival of Voices in Balbriggan on Saturday, March 7th. New members are always welcome, no auditions, just come along. LATE MRS BERNADETTE O'DOWD 

The death occurred on Saturday, February 21st (suddenly) at Sligo University Hospital of Mrs Bernadette (Bernie) O'Dowd (née McWeeney), Meera, Boyle Road, Carrick-on-Shannon. Predeceased by her parents Anne Marie and Hugh, sister Marie and brothers Josie and Hugh, Bernie will be sadly missed by her husband, Vincent; daughter, Deirdre (Croghan); sons, Joseph (Boston) and Conor (San Francisco); son-in-law, David O'Connor, Joseph's partner, Marianna, Conor's partner, Priya; grand-daughter, Rebecca; brothers, John (Tuam) and Paul (England); sister, Margaret O'Reilly (Drumlish); brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends. Removal took place to St. Mary's Church, Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursday, February 26th. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, February 27th, followed by cremation in Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan.

FAITH AND FUN CLUB

The Come Follow Me Faith and Fun Club will meet on Saturday, March 7th at 3 p.m. in the Patrician Hall, Cortober.

RECENT DEATH 

The death occurred on Friday, February 20th, at her home, of Marciana (Marcie) O'Brien (née O'Dowd), Farnagh, Leitrim Village. A native of Knockadalteen, Carrick-on-Shannon, she was predeceased by her husband, Liam and her parents Frank and Maureen. Marciana will be sadly missed by her daughters, Marese, Deirdre, Catriona and Sinéad, sons, Declan, Francis and Liam, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sister, Phyllis, brothers, Michael, J.P., Frank, Tommy, Alo and Vincent, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, February 24th in St. Mary's Church, Carrick-on-Shannon followed by interment in Jamestown cemetery.

DEATH OF CROGHAN NATIVE IN FLORIDA 

The funeral Mass for Teresa O'Brien whose death occurred in Florida, USA on October 25th, 2025, was celebrated in St. Michael's Church, Croghan on Saturday, February 28th with interment of ashes afterwards in Killapogue Cemetery. Teresa (nee McHugh) was a native of Enagh, Croghan. Predeceased by her husband, Robert, parents Joseph and Gertie, sister Kathleen and stepson Matthew. Teresa will be sadly missed by her sons, David, Brian and John (J.J.), her step family, brother, James McHugh (Longford), sisters, Marie Walsh (Galway), Evelyn Boyd (Killumod) and Sheila Moore (Galway), sister-in-law Peggy McHugh, brother-in-law Tom Moore, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
