A Tulsk man who ran more than 200 miles for local charities has thanked everyone for their generous support.

Farmer, father of two, and elite athlete Ed Payne recently ran from Shannon Harbour in Offaly along the Grand Canal to Dublin, before running along the Royal Canal all the way to Cloondara and then home to Tulsk, taking short breaks during the journey.

He has raised more than €10,000 for an astro turf pitch at Tulsk National School and the South Roscommon Family Resource Centre in Roscommon Town. Ed visited the school last week to share his experiences with the children and staff.

Speaking to the Herald following his 46 hour run, Ed said he was overwhelmed by the support he received. “Surprisingly good,” he replied with a laugh when asked how he was feeling. “The recovery is going better than expected. Going by my watch I burnt about 23,000 or 24,000 calories and did 191,000 steps on Saturday alone. ”

“The whole journey had its peaks and troughs, you feel good, you feel bad. That’s why I love it.” The natural beauty of the canals, which he described as amazing amenities, also helped keep him motivated. The support from his wife Jennifer, friend Jason Williamson, parents, family and many others was also a huge help.

“People joined me for short runs, long runs. There were conversations about everyday things, like family, job, all these kind of things. You talk about everything and it just takes your mind off the run,” said Ed. “It’s great because when you are just focusing on the running, you don’t lift your chin up and say ‘I am fortunate to be able to do this’.” Ed, who is the father of Ben and Aaron, explained that once he reached Dublin, he knew “that no matter what, I am getting back”.

He said he was overwhelmed to be met by so many people who ran with him as he reached home at 4.10 p.m. on Sunday, September 10th. He also sincerely thanked everyone who helped with the farm while he was running.
