LATE MRS MARY HANLY 

The death occurred peacefully of Mrs Mary Hanly, Callow, Frenchpark on Thursday, August 21st last at The Roscommon Hospice. In her seventy-eighth year, the late Mrs Hanly (née Lavin) was predeceased by her parents Jim and Margaret (Peg), brother Pat and infant son Michael. She will be sadly missed and remembered with love by her husband Micheál, sons Adrian, Tommy and Gary, daughters Deirdre, Orla and Cora, brother Jimmy and his wife, Irene, grandchildren, sons-in-law Padraig, Joe and Richard, daughters-in-law Ann, Elena and Michelle, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and many friends. Her remains were removed to St Bridget’s Church, Breedogue on Sunday, August 24th last for Mass of the Resurrection, followed by Committal Service in Sharkey’s Funeral Home and Cremation Chapel, Loughglynn.

LATE MRS TERESA OWENS 

Mrs Teresa Owens, Kanesfield, Tulsk passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20th last at The Plunkett Community Nursing Home in Boyle. Mother of Helen Brady, Peake, Ballinagare, the late Mrs Owens (née Brock) was predeceased by her husband Tommy some time ago. Teresa (99) is deeply regretted her daughters Mary, Una and Helen, sons Gerry, Tommy, Jimmy and Larry, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. Her remains were removed from Flanagans Funeral Home, Castleplunkett to St. Paul's Church, Kilmurray on Friday evening, last. Following Requiem Mass, celebrated by the local clergy on Saturday, August 23rd last, burial took place in Rathmoyle Cemetery.

BEREAVEMENTS 

Pray for the repose of the souls of Fr. Seamus Glynn, California and Lisacul (brother of the late Fr. Michael Glynn, former Curate of Tibohine), Mr Tommy Lynch, Killeaney, Co. Meath & formerly of Cleaheen, Cootehall; Mr Anthony Bosquette, Castlenode, Strokestown and Mrs Helen Kilfeather Kiernan, Grange, Co. Sligo. May they rest in peace.

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, August 23rd last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 1, 4, 19 and 29. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were Barry Cullinan, Mary Finneran, Seamus O’Gara, Paul Regan and Ruh Lotto Group. The next draw (jackpot €4,200) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, August 30th. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.

SIEL BLEU IRELAND

FOOTBALLERS IN SEARCH OF THIRD VICTORY 

The best wishes of the community are extended to the Tulsk Intermediate Footballers who face their final round-robin game of this year’s championship in Knockcroghery against Creggs this weekend. The team are all but assured of a quarter-final place but a win will assist the team’s upward momentum in the competition against a team who are likely to be strong and durable opponents. Best wishes are extended to all the players and management – see fixtures for confirmation of the game time. Meanwhile Tulsk’s adult second string began their Junior ‘B’ championship campaign with a draw against St. Dominic’s who’s 1-10 was matched by Tulsk’s thirteen points.

RECENT DEATHS 

The sympathies of local residents are extended to the family and friends of the late Teresa Owens (née Brock), late of Kanesfield, Tulsk, in the wonderful care of the staff of The Plunkett Community Nursing Home, Boyle. Predeceased by her husband Tommy, her brothers Tom and Jim, her sisters Marie, Nellie, Annie, Bridie and Winnie, the deceased is survived by her daughters Mary (McCormack), Una (Heneghan) and Helen (Brady), her sons Gerry, Tommy, Jimmy and Larry, her 16 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. The deceased at Flanagan’s Funeral Home, Castleplunkett before being removed to St. Paul's Church, Kilmurray where following Mass of the Resurrection, burial took place afterwards in Rathmoyle Cemetery. The sympathies of parishioners are also extended to the Orla Doorley of Rathcroghan, Tulsk on the passing of her mother Mary Hanly (nee Lavin) of Callow, Frenchpark. The deceased reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Frenchpark before being removed from the home of her daughter and son-in-law (Orla and Joe, Rathcroghan) to St Bridget’s Church, Breedogue arriving for Mass of the Resurrection followed by Committal Service in Sharkey’s Funeral Home and Cremation Chapel, Loughglynn.

CAMOGIE CLUB 

Tulsk’s Junior camogie team were back in action at the weekend as they kicked off their League Campaign delivering an impressive performance to secure a well-deserved win over Oran.

HERITAGE WEEK CELEBRATIONS 

Well done to the members of Tulsk History Society who commemorated the lives of local residents who perished and suffered during the Great Irish Famine of 1845-49. In Tulsk Cemetery a memorial rock and plaque was unveiled, while in Tulsk Macra Hall the Society launched a special Famine publication entitled Tulsk Remembers the Great Famine 1845-1849. A further memorial plaque was later unveiled in Baslick Cemetery.

TULSK DIGI-HUB 

Tulsk Digi-Hub will be running four photography and multi-media classes staring next month for anyone who is interested in creating imagery and photos of local heritage. It is also proposed to complete a short video on local heritage in that time. The course will be funded by Roscommon County Council and no equipment is needed, only one’s phone. FUNDRAISING DANCE 

Kilmurry Hall will host a fundraising dance for the upkeep of their hall on Sunday, September 7th. Music by Mick Flavin with dancing from 8pm to 10pm. Tickets are priced €10 and can be obtained from any member of the local committee. The support of the local community would be greatly appreciated – thank you.

BACK TO STUDY 

Congratulations to local students who received their Leaving Cert results last week. Irrespective of points or grades, it’s hoped the results will prove to be the gateway to fulfilling the ambitions of all those who sat the exam. Best wishes to all students returning to school, particularly those starting out at primary or second level. Best wishes are also extended to students who are beginning their third-level journey or making their first steps in their apprenticeship or through the workforce.

HERITAGE WEEK LECTURE 

Who shot Queen Medb? was the title of a Storytelling Event with Mike McCarthy of Rathcroghan Visitor Centre which took place in the Roscommon Arts Centre. Those lucky enough to attend were treated to a marvellous journey back in time to the prehistoric Iron Age Rathcroghan to share in an evening of storytelling recounting some of the oldest tales in Roscommon and Ireland. Congratulations to Mike McCarthy who held the audience captive with his wonderful story telling ability told with wonder, fun and passion – all told the night was a most informative and entertaining experience.

FARMING RATHCROGHAN 

Congratulations to the organisers of last week’s Farming Rathcroghan Conference which took place in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Tulsk. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Food for Thought’ which explored Irish food through history, archaeology, folklore, and tradition. The Conference had a stellar line-up of speakers and was a most enlightening and informed event.
