Local Notes: Silage Season, Fundraiser and Relics Exhibition
Hundreds of acres of hay were baled and silage harvested within the mixed farming enterprises of Mid-South Roscommon over the five day fine spell of weather from June 22nd to 26th last. Farm linked contractors worked 12 to 16 hour days to meet the demand for their services, which involve increased overheads for the farming community this year arising out of diesel price increases and the increase in bale wrapping prices for plastic due to the Middle East conflict. The chairperson of the Moore IFA branch, Michael Glennon, Camcloon, has saved two thirds of his winter fodder. He has been at the helm on the family farm for the past 25 years.
He said farmers were still doing their hay and silage " bit by bit". However, due to the "great growth" once again and the heat in the ground he believes that July could also prove a productive month for silage and hay. Pat Leonard, Station Road, Kiltoom, who completed a four year term as chairperson of the Roscommon IFA County Executive at the end of February last, knows from his contact with fellow IFA members that like himself they intend to harvest silage once again in mid-July. He also realises that a lot of hay was baled between June 22nd and 26th for sale. The good growth meant that farmers generally could reap the rewards of the fine spell of weather.
