Local Notes: Table Quiz Fundraiser, SCDA Raffle, Progressive 25

TABLE QUIZ FUNDRAISER 

A table quiz will be held in St Faithleach’s GAA Club, Ballyleague on Friday, January 23rd at 8.30 p.m.. Table of 4, €40 per table. Raffle will be held on night. All proceeds going towards St Mary's Church, Ballagh.

IRISH LANGUAGE CLASSES 

Irish language classes for adults will continue in Cruachan Ai (F45HH51) Tulsk on Wednesday, January 28thfrom 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.. This course is suitable for all levels with an emphasis on conversational Irish. Beginners are welcome. It will run every Wednesday for nine weeks and there is a nominal fee of €80. SCDA FORTNIGHTLY DRAW 

Results of the SCDA draw held on January 6th - numbers drawn - 11, 13,16 18. Two Lucky Dip winners - Margaret McHugh, Elphin Street and Bridget O'Malley, Vesnoy. Next draw is on Tuesday, January 20th at the SCDA office. Jackpot - €900. Thank you for your continued support.

LOURDES GROUP QUIZ 

The Strokestown Lourdes Group will hold a Table Quiz in the Percy French Hotel on Friday, January 23rd at 8.30 p.m., €40 for a table of four. Raffle and finger food on the night. All funds raised go to the Lourdes Assisted Pilgrimage Fund 2026. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

YOGA SESSIONS 

Yin yoga sessions resume on Saturday, February 7th at Strokestown Park, facilitated by psychologist, Marianne Fallon. This is an ideal way to renew and reinvigorate your energies for spring.

LATE MR P. J. KEARNS

 The death took place recently at Mullingar General Hospital of Mr Packie Joe Kearns of The Maples, Strokestown. A native of Borefield, Strokestown, he was son of the late Mr Mick Kearns and of the late Mrs Kate Kearns (nee Conneally). He was a highly respected member of the Brothers of Charity community based in Strokestown. News of his passing at the age of 82 years was heard of with deep regret among his relatives, many friends, and the staff of the Brothers of Charity. He was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony and Des, sister, Mrs Annie Ruane (County Westmeath), brothers-in-law, J.J., Frank and Tony, and nephew, Gerard. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at Kiltrustan Church and the interment followed in Strokestown Cemetery. He is survived by his brother, Michael (The Maples); sisters, Mrs Mary Owens (Annaghmore), Mrs Bridie Herity (UK), Mrs Elizabeth McWeeney (Dublin), Mrs Pauline Casserly (Elphin Street) and Mrs Collette McLoughlin (Cloonfree), nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, brothers in-law, and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

LATE MRS HARRIET COX 

The death took place recently at Thomond Lodge Nursing Home, Ballymahon, County Longford, of Mrs Harriet Cox (nee Walshe) of Church View House, Kilglass, wife of the late Mr Austin Cox. A native of Ballinrobe, County Mayo, she was daughter of the late Mr Peter Walshe and of the late Mrs Siobhan Walshe. She had a noted interest in horse breeding and was an annual exhibitor along with her husband at Strokestown Agricultural Show and other shows around the country and at the RDS in Dublin. She spearheaded the development of farmhouse accommodation in the county to answer a need to attract coarse anglers from the UK and the Continent. This supplemented the hotel accommodation already available in the area. Her talents were recognised when she was nominated a director of the Midland Regional Tourism Organisation and successfully served on its committee for many years. She also enjoyed horse racing. She also assisted her husband in the running of the family farm. News of her passing, in her 92nd year, was heard of with deep sorrow among her relatives, neighbours and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, John, and by her son-in-law, Ross. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church, Kilglass, and the interment followed in Kilglass Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Tom; daughters, Siobhan, Avril, Linda and Shirley; sisters, Helen and Joan; daughter-in-law, Carmel; sons-in-law, Adrian, Jerry and John; grandchildren, Billy, Andrew, Alexandra, Austin, Brad, Lucinda, Genevieve, Mark, Adrianna, James, William and Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Theodore, Elliot, Victoria Harriet, Summer and Seanna, nieces, nephews and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

In the Kilglass Gaels Lotto held on January 17th the numbers drawn were: 9, 11, 15, 18 Bonus Number, 25. There was no jackpot winner. There was one Match 3 number winner of €200, Isla Reilly. Next week's jackpot €8,900 for four correct numbers, €12,900 for four correct numbers plus Bonus Number. Next draw takes place in the clubrooms on Saturday, January 24th.

BALLINAMUCK SOCIAL DANCING & COMMUNITY GATHERING 

The next social evening is Sunday, January 25th from 5 – 7 p.m. in the !98 Memorial Hall, Ballinamuck Village (N39 Y7C1). Music by Tom Moran.  This week's Kilglass Ladies Bonus Ball number was 12. Winners, Sheila Lawe & Margaret Duffy, €50 each.

YOGA 

Women's health yoga classes continue at 7 p.m. on Thursdays in the Community Centre, Roosky. These classes focus on functional movement using Pilates bands to build strength. There is also a focus on the importance of keeping the pelvic floor strong through exercise and lifestyle changes. Limited places remain.
