Chairperson of the Boyle Municipal District has welcomed the news that a seven kilometre stretch of the new N5 will open shortly.

At Monday’s council meeting, Roscommon County Council CEO Shane Tiernan confirmed that this Frenchpark bypass section is set to open by Easter "subject to safety verifications being signed off on before then".

Mr Tiernan also outlined that the exits and the entrances along this portion would have to be controlled for a number of weeks in order for works to be completed and "fully blended in". This section of the new road is seven kilometres long.

"This is a good news story," said the CEO.

The N5 project, involving a 33km upgrade of road, runs between the Ballaghaderreen bypass and Scramogue, and will bypass Frenchpark, Tulsk, and Strokestown.

Speaking after yesterday's council meeting, Boyle MD Chairperson Cllr Sean Moylan said the road project represented a significant Government investment in the North Roscommon region.

He said the new road would greatly benefit Roscommon and the wider north Connacht area by enhancing connectivity and “making our area far more attractive for investment and business development”.

The Fianna Fáil councillor said that more importantly, the new road would also greatly improve road safety.

“Over the years, there have been far too many accidents and regrettably, some very sad fatalities along this stretch of the N5 from Ballinagare to Tibohine. For that reason alone, the completion of this section is especially welcome.

“As we look at how Frenchpark is affected, it will also give the other villages and towns on the route some idea of traffic volumes in the years ahead,” said Cllr Moylan.
