Community allotments project for Ballyleague

The aim of the community allotment project in Ballyleague is to to foster a sense of community, promote sustainable agriculture, and provide residents with opportunities for growing their own food.
A proposal has been made to Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy Towns committee to establish a community allotments and gardens project on a designated plot of local land. The aim is to foster a sense of community, promote sustainable agriculture, and provide residents with opportunities for growing their own food.
This initiative seeks to transform a vacant area in the village into a vibrant and productive space that benefits the local community in several ways.
Allotment areas can be divided into individual allotment plots of varying sizes, available for residents to lease at an affordable cost. The project is set up to encourage residents to grow their own fruits, vegetables, and herbs, promoting self-sufficiency and healthy living.
The project would include community gardens to establish communal garden spaces with raised beds for residents who may have limited mobility or resources.
The project would also include educational programmes in conjunction with Roscommon County Council's Climate Action plan, help to organise climate change workshops and classes on gardening, composting, and sustainable farming practices and partner with local schools to offer educational opportunities for children and promote food awareness.
The project will help promote eco-friendly gardening practices, such as composting, rainwater harvesting, and organic gardening and encourage the use of sustainable materials and renewable energy sources for maintenance.
The project is planned to commence in early 2024 and is expected to be fully operational within six months. The Community Allotments and Gardens Project will provide a valuable resource for residents of Ballyleague and adjoining areas.
The group behind the project welcomes any feedback and support for this proposal and looks forward to working together to bring this project to life.
