Do not consume public water supply notice announced

A temporary 'Do Not Consume' notice has been issued for all those accessing the public water supply in the Athlone area. The notice is in place from 5pm Friday, April 19 until 9pm tonight. 

The Health Service Executive (HSE) and Westmeath County Council have advised water will temporarily contain elevated fluoride levels and cautions against consuming anything from the taps during this time period. 

It is estimated that this notice applies to 20000 customers across the Athlone area. 

Uisce Éireann urges customers not to treat this as a 'boil water' notice and boiling the water between this four hour time period will not make it safe to consume. 

Special caution is to be given regarding bottle-fed infants and water should not be used to make up infant formula under any circumstances.

During this time period, it is essential not to use the water for drinking or for making up baby formula. Filters will not
