Thursday, June 12th marked a unique occasion in the business life of Williamstown.

On that day, Martin and Bridie Smyth, who have served the community for several years in their capacity as proprietors of the local convenience store, deli, filling station and Post Office, Smyth’s Spar, retired from the business.

The new operators of the store are Eugene and Dymphna Sharkey, who have huge experience in the world of business with their Spar supermarket in Tuam.

The community thanks Martin and Bridie for their years of dedicated service to the community, including all through the worst years of the pandemic. Wishing them a happy retirement and also every success in all aspects of their future lives. Wishing a successful continuation of the Williamstown business to the new operators and also a happy time in the community.

Martin Smyth said that they had opted to step back and enjoy the next phase of life, a new chapter and a semi-retirement.

“This has been a truly special chapter, a family-run business where everyone from my wife, Bridie, my children Eilis, Stephen, Padraig, Aoife and my grandson Dean , have all worked at some stage alongside me on this journey,” he said.

“It brings us great comfort to know that the store will remain in excellent hands as we lease it to Eugene and Dymphna Sharkey. Well known for their exceptional store at Sharkey’s Spar Tuam, they bring with them a wealth of experience. Their dedication reassures us that the store will continue to thrive in the very best of hands,” said Martin Smyth.

“We would like to take this moment to express our deepest gratitude to our manager Jane and incredible staff, both past and present, for their loyal support over the years. It has truly been an unforgettable journey, one filled with hard work, laughter, and a shared commitment to serving our community. “Working alongside such dedicated and talented individuals has been an honour, and we’re proud of all we’ve achieved together, including the many awards earned along the way.

“Our sincere thanks also go to our suppliers. Your reliability and partnership have been essential in helping us deliver the quality products our customers have come to expect each day.

“And, of course, to our loyal customers — thank you. Your continued support over the years has meant the world to us. Whether you stood by us through rebrands, joined us for community fundraisers, or simply kept shopping with us through the ups and downs, including a global pandemic, your loyalty and kindness have never gone unnoticed. It’s truly been a rollercoaster, and we’re grateful to have shared it with you.

“Finally, we wish Eugene and Dymphna every success as they take the reins. We have no doubt they will continue to grow and improve the business, keeping it at the heart of the Williamstown community,” said the Symths.
