Sitting councillor John Naughten and Dominic Connolly have been ratified as Fine Gael local election candidates to run in the Athlone Municipal District. Also pictured is Senator Micheal Carrigy, who chaired last night's convention, and Senator Aisling Dolan.

Former councillor Domnick Connolly who resigned from Fine Gael in 2011 over the Roscommon Hospital issue will now run as a candidate for the party in this summer’s local elections.

Mr Connolly and sitting councillor John Naughten were ratified at a Fine Gael convention in the Athlone Springs Hotel yesterday evening (Friday), and both will run in the Athlone Municipal District.

While a sitting Fine Gael councillor in 2011, the Fuerty native resigned along with fellow party councillor Laurence Fallon over the controversial closure of the A&E department at Roscommon County Hospital.

This week, Mr Fallon, who is currently a sitting Independent councillor in the Athlone Municipal District, confirmed he will seek re-election to Roscommon County Council in this year’s local elections.
