Local towns clean up at Tidy Towns Awards

There has been huge local success in this year’s SuperValu Tidy Town’s awards, with Carrick on Shannon being named as Ireland’s Tidiest Town and Overall winner of Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town.
County Roscommon also took home a substantial haul of medals and awards. In Westmeath, Athlone came second in its category and was awarded a gold medal. In Galway, Ballygar received a bronze medal in its category.
In Roscommon, Keadue was named the county winner on 393 points. This was followed closely by Ballintubber on 390, and both towns received a gold medal. Castlecoote came third with 387 points and received a silver medal, with Cloontuskert receiving the bronze medal with 380 points. Dysart also won an endeavour award. These villages were all in the ‘Category A’ section which is for villages with a population under 200 people.
In ‘Category C’, for towns with a population of 1,001 to 2,500, Tarmonbarry received a bronze medal. Finally in the ‘Category E’ for a town with a population of between 5,001 to 10,000, Roscommon Town won a gold medal.
Announcing Carrick-on-Shannon as the overall winner today, Minister Dara Calleary offered his deepest congratulations to Carrick-on-Shannon and all of its Tidy Towns volunteers.
“This is a wonderful achievement and a special moment of immense pride for Carrick-on-Shannon and indeed the wider county of Leitrim,” he said.
“Having consistently entered the competition over the last 40 years, Carrick-on-Shannon’s achievement today continues to showcase all that is good about resilience, innovation, sustainability, community spirit and volunteerism. This is at the core of what the competition is all about.” Six hundred Tidy Towns volunteers were present at the SuperValu Tidy Towns awards ceremony at Croke Park in Dublin with the event livestreamed to many more online.
This year 929 towns were competing for the prestigious awards demonstrating the continuing huge national interest in the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition, which has been running since 1958. This is the highest number of entries ever received in the competition’s history.
